Action Figure Review: Cable from Marvel Legends Series: X-Men '97 by Hasbro

Most of the new X-Men '97 figures arrived last month but with how busy things were with 31 Days of Toy Terror it has taken me a bit to get to them. I loved the first two series of X-Men '97 figures that Hasbro released in 2023 and 2024 and it's nice to get another series of characters. Hasbro is definitely putting out some solid X-Men '97 product and I'm excited to see when we get figures based on the upcoming second season as everything so far is based on season 1. Cable appeared in eight episodes in the original animated X-Men series and five episodes in X-Men '97 and this look covers most of his appearances throughout both shows. This is also a pretty great standard Cable for folks wanting one. While the X-Men '97 figures do have a bit of an animated style to them, I don't think they stand out in a standard comic collection, either. These really get me excited as I loved the X-Men animated series as a kid and wanted figures that more resembled the show than what Toy Biz released at the time. Ready to join Nathan Summers on a journey through time and space? Then join me after the break...

The Facts:

Height: 7 inches

Articulation: Swivel/hinge ankles, double hinged knees, swivel thighs, ball-jointed hips, swivel waist, balljointed midtorso, swivel/hinge shoulders, bicep swivels, double hinged elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, balljointed neck, and a barbell jointed head.

Accessories: 4 swappable hands, rifle, pistol, and two firing effects.

Non-Scalper Price: $26 to $28 dollars

The Positives:

* This is an excellent looking Cable figure that really captures his classic X-Force look in a more streamlined, animated style. He's wearing some darker and more muted colors like an olive drab green for his boots, shoulder straps, and gloves, but the red details on those straps and the X-Logo on the device around his neck do add a nice splash of color. He feels like a very unique figure that is explicitly sculpted to be Cable with little room for reuse. He's still a big, brawny guy, but his details are just a bit smoother than on most comic based Cable figures. He's still got pouches, like the ones wrapped around his cybernetic arm, but they're less bulky and intrusive to his movement. The shoulder pads are still pretty massive, though.

* Cyclops isn't a small guy by any means but check out how large Cable is! He's a massive dude! Hasbro didn't try to shrink him down to fit on the card or save a few pennies. Nathan Summers is taller and wider than his dad (and most other figures) for sure.

* Cable is absolutely the kind of guy you just don't want to mess with. He looks serious. Very serious. And not just serious, but a but a bit aggravated as well. There's so much character in his face!

* I'm also loving the headset on his left side. I had a few different Cable figures as a kid and I always loved the headset on Toy Biz's X-Force Cable version 3. Headsets are like knives sheathed on the shoulder; they're just one of those cool things I just really dig on an action figure.

* Cable's sporting pouches around his thighs and some rather interesting boots with mustard colored padding.

* Cable is pretty well articulated. The articulation is pretty standard for Marvel Legends and while he doesn't have boot swivels, he does have thigh swivels. His mid torso is balljointed and has an excellent range of motion. All pinless joints with a pretty decent range of motion and a sturdy build definitely makes Cable a lot of fun to pose. Having two different guns also makes him fun. He looks great in various firing poses and has a ton of shelf presence.

* Four swappable hands are included: A right hand fist, a pair of pistol grips, and a left handed loose grip for holding the larger rifle. Everything swaps easily and allows Cable to use all of his accessories.

* Cable comes with a pair of weapons that look like some pretty serious hardware. First up is an absolute unit for a rifle. It's big, box, futuristic, and it has some painted details to give it a bit of color.

* Next up is a smaller weapon that looks like a futuristic submachinegun of sorts. I definitely recognize both of these weapons from the show so they were specifically made for this figure; they're not just reused parts from previously released figures.

* Two firing effects are included as well which can both fit into the barrels of Cables weapons. He looks really cool in various firing poses with these energy bursts attached to his guns.

The Negatives:

* My only negative with Cable is that the way his shoulder pads are designed really does limit his shoulder movement. They're a little flexible but not enough to allow him to lift his arms straight up and down.

Is Cable the star of the third series of X-Men '97 figures? He might be! He's an impressive figure with a great color scheme, his articulation is pretty solid, even factoring in the limitations of the shoulder pads, and he has a nice complement of accessories. Those energy attachments for the guns are just a nice addition. Marvel Legends figures don't always come with as many accessory as some other lines but Cable feels quite well accessorized. He's a Great and a 1/2 figure and he might be my favorite in the series. I've got a few more to review over the next month or so, so stay tuned! There are plenty more mutants to come.

If you dig Cable/ Nathan Summers, I've also reviewed the Marvel Legends Sasquatch BAF series Cable and the X-Men Juggernaut BAF series Cable.
