Action Figure Review: Professor from Legends of Cthulhu by Warpo

So far from Warpo's Legends of Cthulhu toyline I've covered the Cultist and his variant, the High Priest, and the Spawn of Cthulhu and his variant, Conjured Cthulhu. Today I'm looking at the hero of the toyline: The Professor, Cthulhu investigator. He's an archetypal adventuresome scholar from the early 20th century with his snazzy duds, dreamy mustache, and old school revolver who is ready to give the Cult of Cthulhu the what for. During the Kickstarter campaign one of the stretch goals was a variant of the Professor which was called the Author. It would have been a figure of H.P. Lovecraft himself but unfortunately the campaign didn't raise enough funds. Hopefully we'll see the Author in the future but for right now? Let's check out the Professor!

Action Figure Review: Conjured Cthulhu from Legends of Cthulhu by Warpo

While the figure I reviewed yesterday was the Spawn of Cthulhu and the most well known Great Old One himself, I think today's figure might actually be a representation of Cthulhu. A variant and a stretch goal for the Kickstarter campaign, Conjured Cthulhu seems to represent a conjured image of the creature that has been summoned by his followers. You know, kind of like a holographic Emperor Palpatine or the Spirit of Hordak figure. Some people just love translucent figures, making this guy quite attractive to a wide audience. Ready to conjure up some Cthulhu awesomeness? Then join me after the break...

Action Figure Review: Spawn of Cthulhu from Legends of Cthulhu by Warpo

After reviewing both the Cultist and the Kickstarter exclusive High Priest, it's finally time to give the main man a once over. Well, it turns out that this isn't actually Cthulhu; it's a Spawn of Cthulhu. An over sized Cthulhu was a stretch goal for the Kickstarter campaign that never came to fruition then but that will hopefully be available at some point in the future. For now though, you've got one of Cthulhu's youngins to look after. Or just a very small Cthulhu, if you want. Anyways, let's just get on to the toy because he's pretty grand. More of this green monstrosity after the break...

Action Figure Review: The High Priest from Legends of Cthulhu by Warpo

In June of last year over at ThEpic Review I interviewed Bryan Katzel of Warpo Toys about their Kickstarter funded retro-throwback line "Legends of Cthulhu" which I had already backed. A week or two ago I received my shipment of action figures from this H.P. Lovecraft inspired line and I'm pumped about showing these off! Imagining that Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos served as an inspiration for a late 1970's/ early 1980's toyline, Warpo has brought us some of the coolest retro inspired action figures that we've seen yet. Today I'm looking at the High Priest, a Kickstarter exclusive variant of the Cultist. This is the guy who leads the chant "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn" in order to hasten the coming of Cthulhu and keep the other guys in line. Ready for a look at this guy? The join me after the break...

Action Figure Review: The Cultist from Legends of Cthulhu by Warpo

In June of last year over at ThEpic Review I interviewed Bryan Katzel of Warpo Toys about their Kickstarter funded retro-throwback line "Legends of Cthulhu" which I had already backed. Well, just this past week I received my shipment of action figures from the H.P. Lovecraft inspired line and I'm pumped about showing these off to you good folks! Imagining that Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos served as an inspiration for a late 1970's/ early 1980's toyline, Warpo has brought us some of the coolest retro inspired action figures yet. Today I'm looking at the Cultist, a member of the Cult of Cthulhu who sits around chanting "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn" in order to hasten the coming of Cthulhu, one of the Great Old Ones. Ready for a look? The join me after the break...

Action Figure Review: TIE Pilot from Star Wars: The Black Series Phase II by Hasbro

The newest series of Star Wars: The Black Series action figures have been out for a few months now but I finally just found a TIE Pilot at Walgreens. While we're getting closer and closer to the newest wave with Bossk and Han Solo in the Stormtrooper disguise, I figured we had better look over the TIE Pilot. I've always loved the TIE Pilot's costume; in fact, it was one of the few Star Wars figures I owned during my childhood. I've also just watching Star Wars: Rebels which gives the TIE Pilots plenty of screen time. I'm a sucker for any troopers or clones in the Black Series as they just usually turn out better than anything else in the line. Looking at the armor of the figure and the design of the costume, this is clearly a TIE Pilot from A New Hope (the Return of the Jedi designs are different). I've enjoyed looking at the incredibly detailed 501st Legion costume references in order to check the accuracy of these figures and I'll do so again here as I'm reviewing the TIE Pilot. Ready to go over this guy with a fine toothed comb? Then join me after the break...

Minifigure Review: Monsters by Hing Fat

Two of my favorite things about action figure blogging are showing off my collection and looking at the toy acquisitions of others. One of my favorites is Robot Monster Space Super Hero, the blog of collector extraordinaire John Gaither. There have been quite a few times when I've been on John's site and decided that I too had to own something he was showing off. This happened again a week or two ago when John showed off this really bizarre bucket of plastic monsters minifigures, simply titled Monsters. As soon as I saw this incredibly bizarre set of plastic army men like monsters, I knew I had to have it. What a weird set? It was pretty cheap on Amazon and snagged it as soon as I finished reading John's coverage of the toy. This reminds me of some toy that would have existed in the 1980s that maybe I found used at a garage sale or that an older cousin or neighbor would have had but wouldn't known anything about. It feels too wonderfully otherworldly and strange to be something that I could have bought at a regular store; it needs to have an aura of mystery about it. Anyways, I'm going to cover this awesomely odd set and give my thoughts on it too! Ready for some Monsters? Then join me after the break...

Action Figure Barbecue's Top Ten Favorite Toy Lines of 2014!

As has become a yearly tradition, it's time for me to share my top 10 favorite action figure lines of the past year. My 2012 and 2013 selections are housed at ThEpic Review 2014 was an odd year for action figures as distribution problems or a lack of releases hurt many lines that I've collected in the past. Still, there were some great toys to be had and I'm going to look at them here. Keep in mind a few things: First, these are my favorite lines. If I were doing a "best of 2014" I'd definitely be looking at the merits of lines that I don't even collect. Second, I do a separate top ten for individual figures from lines that I didn't mention here. Sometimes a single action figure release or a standout figure from a line I'm not overwhelmed by captures my attention: That's where my top 10 figures list comes in. Third, I list these alphabetically, not by merit. Ready to get started for my top 10 favorite lines of 2014? Then here we go...

Action Figure Review: Link from World of Nintendo by Jakks Pacific

Link perfectly embodies the heroism, courage, and selflessness that defines the archetype of the fantasy hero. Perhaps it's fitting, then, that there is not just one Link but many Links throughout the history of Hyrule. Today I'm looking at another figure from Jakks Pacific's World of Nintendo line: Link. This version of Link represents the hero as he appeared in 2011 Legend of Zelda: The Skyward Sword. Sadly, this is pretty much the only mainstream Zelda game I've never played simply because I'm not a huge fan of the Wii and never owned the extra motion piece that attached to the remote. In the continuity of the series, however, The Skyward Sword takes place earlier than any previous game and so this is kind of the first Link. Fortunately for toy fans, this is a very traditional looking Link who will look great alongside all of your other World of Nintendo figures. Ready for a look at Link? Then join me after the break...

Action Figure Review: Donkey Kong from World of Nintendo by Jakks Pacific

While Donkey Kong first appeared in Nintendo's 1981 videogame Donkey Kong, this figure is more based on his modern look which first appeared in 1994's Donkey Kong (Game Boy) and Donkey Kong Country (SNES). The tie is really the only element of Donkey Kong's costume but the character design has stayed largely the same for over 20 years now. That's OK, though, because the big gorilla is a recognizable icon in gaming and he's got a look that lasts. As the second oversized figure in series one of Jakks Pacific's World of Nintendo toyline, Donkey Kong (DK to his friends) comes packaged in a large window box and retails for around $15 bucks. Ready for a look at this funky monkey? Then join me after the break...

Action Figure Review: Bowser from World of Nintendo by Jakks Pacific

Is there anyone who doesn't know who Bowser is? Anyone? Anyone? Yup, didn't think so. Ever since appearing in Super Mario Bros. in 1985 Bowser is pretty much the go to bad guy when you think of video game antagonists. He's a fire breathing, princess kidnapping, evil dictator who just keeps coming back after every defeat; what's not to love? Bowser is part of Jakks Pacific's World of Nintendo line and is featured as one of the two "deluxe" figures available (along with Donkey Kong). Released in a window box rather than on a traditional blister card, Bowser does impress with his size and his $15 price tag. Is he worth tracking down? Read on and find out...

A New Batgirl Review: Batgirl from DC Comics Designer Series: Greg Capullo by DC Collectibles

You probably knew this was coming because as a huge Batgirl fan I have to buy every Batgirl action figure, statue, and trade paperback that gets released. I wasn't expecting this figure until this spring but they seem to be showing up early which I'm completely fine with. While DC Collectibles released an awesome Batgirl figure in their The New 52 line this past fall, they decided to include Batgirl as part of series three of the Greg Capullo inspired DC Comics Designer Series. Upon learning that this figure was being made, my first thought was "When did Greg Capullo draw Batgirl?" Marketing stuff seems to imply this is a tie in with Zero Year, but that makes no sense and isn't true. The Batman figure in series three and Gordon are Zero Year based, but not Babs. If anything, this is based on her appearances in a few issues of the Death of the Family story arc. Anyways, it's another Batgirl figure and I'm not going to complain one bit. Ready for a look at the world's greatest, toughest, smartest, most popular superhero ever? Then join me for another Batgirl review, right after the break...

Action Figure Review: Alice from Grimm Fairy Tales Presents Alice in Wonderland by CS Moore Studio Ltd.

Last month I entered a contest over at Needless Things that was sponsored by Zenescope Entertainment and I ended up winning a Zenescope prize package. I received a copy of the Wonderland Board Game, a Christmas card, a trade paperback of one of their Wonderland comics, and this action figure of Alice from Grimm Fairy Tales Presents Alice in Wonderland. Zenescope is a interesting company, and a successful one (they've been around for 10 years). I read a number of their titles in trade paperback form and while they tell great stories and have some excellent art that certainly feels very modern, many of their sales methods definitely feel like they're from the early 1990s. You know, things like multiple cover variants (granted a lot of companies do that), bad girl books, and cheesecake pinup style covers. That's not a knock against them, though, as it appears to be working just fine. Anyways, this Alice figure is rather interesting; it's sculpted by Clayburn Moore who was one of the pioneers of direct market and collector targeted action figures in the mid-late 1990s. Looking at this figure, there are things about it that feel both modrn and incredibly dated. Want to learn more? Then read on....

Action Figure Review: Red Hood from DC Comics Designer Series: Greg Capullo by DC Collectibles

The Red Hood Gang has a long history in Batman lore, so it makes sense that Scott Snyder brought them back for the New 52's Batman origin story. Appearing originally in issue #0 of Batman and later reappearing in issue #21 to kick off the Zero Year storyline "Secret City" the Red Hood Gang is a band of movers and shakers in Gotham who conceal their identities with red armored masks. They have a leader in Red Hood One, a mysterious and sadistic villain with an inestimable reach in Gotham, and prove to be a challenge for Bruce as he is beginning his career as a crime fighter. This figure appears in series 2 of DC Collectible's awkwardly named "DC Comics Designer Series: Greg Capullo" line which is filled with Batman characters that Capullo has rendered within the New 52. It's been a great Batman line so far with a great mixture of heroes and villains, new faces and old favorites. Read to look at figure #5, the Red Hood? Then join me after the break...

Action Figure Review: Kane (with chestburster) from Alien ReAction by Funko

One of my favorite toylines when I was younger was Galoob's Aliens Micro Machines. I loved those things and spent hours playing with them. One of my particular favorites was the playset that looked like an Alien head and opened up to show scenes from the Nostromo interior and LV-426. The best feature, though, was a floor of the playset that looked like the Nostromo's dining hall. In order to reenact Alien's most infamous scene, it featured a table that you could place a small figure of Kane (John Hurt) on that made it look like the chestburster was lunging from his chest. A small wheel allowed you to wiggle the small alien creature around to really enhance the effect! While Kane was one of the figures sculpted in the 1979 Kenner prototypes for an Alien based toyline (in his spacesuit), Funko has added two more versions of Gilbert Ward Kane to the toyline: One has a Facehugger on his head and one has the chestburder bursting out of his chest. The chestburster version is the figure I'm looking at today. Ready for a look at good ol' Kane? Are you perplexed that Kane has more variations than Ripley or the Alien? Action Figure Review: John J. Rambo (Rambo: First Blood Part II) from Rambo by NECA

First Blood might be the best of the Rambo films but Rambo: First Blood Part II is without a doubt the most iconic. This is the film that inspired 1000s of other action movies and video games, was parodied in both Hot Shots! Part Deux and UHF, and made us all want to wear red bandannas around our heads. In 2013 NECA gave us two awesome Rambo figures from First Blood and late last year they gave us out first version of Sly Stallone from the second film. This is part 7 of my Christmas haul and was another gift from my in-laws. Did your in-laws buy you an action figure of a shirtless, machine gun wielding Sylvester Stallone? Cause mine did! More details after the break...

I Just Subscribed to Loot Crate to get Star Wars #1

I love getting goofy stuff in the mail, so I just signed up for Loot Crate. Heard of it? It's a subscription service that costs between $12 and $14 dollars a month which involves you getting a crate of bizarre nerdy stuff. They guarantee you'll get at least $40 dollars worth of stuff and honestly I believe that. Look at some of the cool stuff they gave out a month or two ago for a Galactic themed crate. There's a Funko ReAction figure and a Funko mystery mini. That's about 17-18 dollars worth of stuff right there. It's different every month but you get the idea. Anyways, if you subscribe by Monday evening you can get an exclusive cover of Marvel's Star Wars #1 in the next crate. That's already worth 3 or 4 bucks at least. Anyways, you can subscribe a month at a time, three months at a time or six months at a time. I did the three month plan to see what I think (and get the exclusive Star Wars comic cover). If you're interested, check it out: Loot Crate. Also, use STARWARS as a discount code and you'll save three dollars. Wizard!

Action Figure Review: Alien (with Metallic Flesh) from Alien ReAction by Funko

You know what one of the best things about being married is? Not only do we have Christmas with my family but we also celebrate Christmas with my wife's family, too! Today is part 6 of Barbecue's Christmas haul and today I'm looking at an action figure gift from my in-laws: The Alien with metallic flesh from Funko's Alien ReAction line. This paint variant of the previous Alien figure is part of the second series of figure's from Alien ReAction and comes on a very cool retro inspired blister card. The first series Alien is the only other Alien ReAction figure I owned from series one but I like the sculpt so much that I wanted this metallic fellow, too. The blister card for this figure shows an image of the Alien floating in space from the end of the film; is this supposed to represent him perhaps being covered in frost and freezing in the cold vacuum of outer space? Who knows? Ready for a look at the Alien? Then join me after the break...

Minifigure Review: Brian in a Tuxedo from Family Guy Figurines

This one time I was out Geocaching over the holidays with my family and I stopped in at a Food Lion to grab some Gatorade when I found a vending machine selling Family Guy figurines. Since I usually get a chuckle out of Family Guy and I love minifigures I ponied up the 75 cents that I miraculously had in my pocket and hoped to get something good. I ended up with this cool little figure of Brian in a tuxedo. There are ten figures in this set and they're all variations of Stewie, Peter, and Brian. This will be a small review but since this is a small figure I think it'll be OK. More details after the break...

Action Figure Review: Yoshi from World of Nintendo by Jakks Pacific

Jakks Pacific's world of Nintendo has been a pleasant surprise of a line. While they're not perfect, they are rather fun and inexpensive. So far I've looked at Mario and Wario from the first series and today I'm checking out Mario's friend, ally, and part-time steed Yoshi. Yoshi's full name is T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas and he first appeared back in 1990 in Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo. Yoshi's size has varied from time to time but this figure is a pretty good representation of the standard modern Yoshi. Ready for a look at everyone's favorite dinosaur/ dragon sidekick? Then join me after the break...

Action Figure Review: Flutterina from Masters of the Universe Classics by Mattel

I'm reviewing some releases from back over the past year to catch up on a few Masters of the Universe Classics reviews that I missed and today I'm taking a look at Flutterina! Flutterina was the basic subscription figure for August of 2014. Her vintage counterpart was released as part of the second series of She-Ra: Princess of Power action figures in 1986 and actually fairly closely resembles her Filmation counterpart. It seems that most of the second series figures were far more accurate to the animation (or maybe it was the other way around) and I'm going to go out on a limb and say most MOTU fans prefer the Filmation looks over the vintage toy looks. So who is Flutterina? She's the "Beautiful 'Flying' Lookout, presumably, of the Great Rebellion. Why is "Flying" in quotation marks on the bio and package? Probably because Mattel didn't want to get sued by someone claiming that their Flutterina didn't really fly. Of course, Glimmer doesn't really "Light the Way" and the Castaspella toy doesn't really "Hypnotize" anyone, so maybe I'm just barking up the wrong tree. Let's just talk about this super cool butterfly lady.....

Action Figure Review: Mario from World of Nintendo by Jakks Pacific

If you're interested in an action figure of Mario right now, you currently have a few options. S.H. Figuarts has releases this insanely cool Mario that's highly articulated, comes with a ton of accessories, and is compatible with lots of accessory packs. It retails for between $30 and $40 dollars but it's so cool that the good folks over at O.A.F.E. even gave it their coveted Toy of the Year award for 2014! There's also the Mario figure I'm looking at today from Jakks Pacific's World of Nintendo line. It only cost me around $7 or $8 bucks and it's part of a line that seems to have some potential for growth based on announcements for upcoming waves. Ready for a look at Mario? Then join me after the break...

Action Figure Review: Wario from World of Nintendo by Jakks Pacific

As a kid I always wanted Nintendo based action figures. Having received my NES as a Christmas gift in 1987, it goes without saying that Nintendo was a dominant part of my childhood. I'd make due with whatever Nintendo based toys I could get my hands on including PVC figurines and McDonald's Happy Meal toys, but it still always perplexed me that no company really tried a full fledged Nintendo action figure line. Over the past decade or so, though, a few companies have attempted a few figures here and there. The past year or two have seen the announcement and release of a few cool Nintendo characters like the Figma Link and the S.H. Figuarts Mario but I want an expansive toyline. When I first saw Jakks Pacific's "World of Nintendo" line, I thought they seemed kind of cool but were going to be one shots of Mario, Yoshi, and Link. When I learned about all of the cool upcoming toys Jakks Pacific has planned for "World of Nintendo" I quickly changed my tune as this sounds like the Nintendo line I've always wanted. Samus and a Metroid? A Goomba and a Skull Kid? Shy Guys? Sign me up now. I quickly snatched up the figures I could find and it's one of those 1-1 figures I'm looking at today: Wario! First appearing in Super Mario World 2: 6 Golden Coins (my first Game Boy game) and later headlining the insane WarioWare series, Wario has become a much beloved evil version of everyone's favorite plumber. Ready for a look at Wario? Then join me after the break...

Action Figure Review: 30th Anniversary Ultmate Freddy from A Nightmare on Elm Street by NECA

It's part five of my Christmas haul and never in my wildest dreams did I anticipate being 31 and receiving a Freddy Krueger action figure from my parents for Christmas! Sure enough, though, this guy was under my tree on Christmas morning and I'm a happier collector for it. This isn't just any regular Freddy Krueger action figure, though: This is the 30th Anniversary Ultimate Freddy from NECA. Based on the original A Nightmare on Elm Street film, this version of the iconic boogeyman portrayed by Robert Englund comes in a five panel box with three different heads, swappable hands, and a few cool little extras. Ready for a closer look at Freddy? Then join me after the break. Just don't go to sleep....

Action Figure Review: Fluttershy from My Little Pony Vinyl Collectibles by Funko

It's part 4 of my Christmas haul and today I'm looking at a gift I got from my wife: Fluttershy from Funko's My Little Pony line of vinyl collectible figures. Yes, I'm a bit of a brony and I've been collecting these Funko vinyls since last year. The Hasbro My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic offerings are definitely not my cup of tea but when I saw these figures, I couldn't resist. Not only has Funko released the Mane 6 but they've also released great other characters like Trixie, Discord, the Daring Do, and Derpy. I actually ordered a Fluttershy offline a month or two ago for far below the typical selling price but I ended up getting the "clear glitter" variant. She wasn't the Fluttershy I wanted for my collection but she is far more rare and has a decent selling price, so I kept her. Ready for a closer look at this Fluttershy? Then join me after the break...

Lego Review: Kraang's Turtle Target Practice 30270-1 from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Lego

It's part 3 of Barbecue17's Christmas haul! Today I'm looking at a stocking stuffer that appeared courtesy of good ol' St. Nick: Kraang's Turtle Target Practice from Lego's Nickelodeon based TMNT line. This is one of those small poly-bagged sets that only includes a few pieces and functions as more of a glorified minifigure. This set features one of the Kraang droids from the cartoon using a turret based weapon of some kind to attack some tiny turtle targets. Say that five times fast! Join me for a closer look after the break...

Toy Review: Groot from Disney Infinity: Marvel Superheroes by Disney Interactive

It's part 2 of Barbecue17's Christmas Haul and today I'm looking at Groot from Disney Infinity: Marvel Superheroes. Groot's one of those interactive toys like Skylanders or Nintendo's Amiibo figures that allows you to unlock a character in a video game. I have Disney Infinity 2.0 but I'm honestly more interested in this toy simply because it's a really cool stylized version of Groot. The figures attracted me to the game and not the other way around. Groot appeared in my stocking on Christmas morning and was a pleasant surprise. A few more pictures and thoughts after the break...

Action Figure Review: Gwildor from Masters of the Universe Classics by Mattel

I absolutely love the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie. Yeah, it has some weaker parts in the middle,  but it's a lot of fun. I'd honestly say that the first 20 minutes or so and the last act, basically everything set on Eternia, are pretty much my favorite depictions of Masters of the Universe in existence. That being said you can probably imagine that I was really looking forward to Gwildor. I've always loved the character (who was played by the late, great Billy Barty) despite him being a replacement for Orko in the film. As a Thenurian, he just adds some more welcome diversity to the MOTUC universe. Being one of the smallest characters in the line, it's somewhat perplexing that Gwildor was sold as a more expensive holiday special item. Mattel claimed this was because of his paint work, the fact that he was a unique sculpt, and that he came with some massive accessories. So, how does Gwildor stack up to other MOTUC figures? Join me after the break...

Action Figure Review: Spinnerella from Masters of the Universe Classics by Mattel

Spinnerella finishes out the 2014 Princess of Power mini-sub by giving us another vintage POP figure; now we only need Angella, Peekablue, and Perfuma to complete the vintage lineup! Interestingly, Spinerella was sold as a deluxe figure and cost a bit more than a basic figure in this line, supposedly because of the tassels hanging down from her arms and her elaborate hairstyle. I'm not sure that I'm really feeling the deluxe vibe here (Mermista feels more like a deluxe figure), particularly because her costume doesn't seem that much more elaborate than any other figure wearing more than a fuzzy loincloth. Anyways, let's take a closer look at Spinnerella, shall we? Join me after the break...
