Action Figure Review: Yondu from Marvel Legends Series: Guardians of the Galaxy by Hasbro

“He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn’t your daddy.”- Yondu Udonta

While the new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 Marvel Legends figures look excellent, it's pretty uncommon for me to pick up the MCU based figures these days. I'd rather add to my ever-growing comic based collection that focuses comic based versions of characters from the MCU and 20th century X-Men/ X-Force/ Alpha Flight/ X-Factor/ pretty much any mutants pre-2000. The now defunct 1/18th scaled Marvel figures actually receive this version of Yondu about 7 or 8 years ago but it's taken this long for him to show up in the standard 1/12th scaled Legends line. This isn't a first appearance version of Yondu, but it's not far from it. It's certainly not a more modern version based on Michael Rooker's portrayal from the MCU, though. Yondu is a Target exclusive and doesn't seem to be too difficult to find. Ready to check out Yondu, one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy from Earth-691? Then join me after the break...

The Positives:

* Here's a great image of this version of Yondu from the comic pages. Overall Hasbro did a pretty admirable job of translating this look into action figure form. He's wearing kind of a half shirt and trunks, big pirate boots, and a variety of gold adornments like a large belt and some cuffs on his right arm. The half shirt covering the left side of his body is painted quite neatly, so it looks pretty good. The gold stripes on his sleeve and the star on his left breast are also stamped on neatly, so everything looks quite sharp.

* I'm loving the headsculpt here. Yondu looks pretty focused and determined. He's Centaurian  from the planet Centauri IV, so he has some unique features like red eyes, dark blue lips, and pointed ears. He's also sporting a massive fin on his head that's an organic part of his body, not a piece of technology like in the Guardians of the Galaxy films.

* Yondu's harness, belt, and the cuffs on his right arm are all separate pieces placed over the basic body sculpt that we've seen many times before. Added on parts like this definitely make the reuse of a base body that's been around for at least 5 years just seem far more palatable and make the figure feel unique.

* Speaking of the base body, overall this is still a really well articulated figure. Yondu even has the pectoral hinges/ "butterfly" joints, which afford him an excellent range of motion for wielding his bow. It's not all sleek and pinless like the newest of the new bodies, but it's still a solid body for the figure.

* I'm sure I've seen this quiver before and I'm sure we'll see it again. The gold body with red arrows is nice, though, and it fits well on Yondu's back, giving him a nice supply of arrows. While MCU's fin and arrow are insanely cool, you might be surprised to know that comic Yondu's arrows are controllable, too. They're made of Yaka, a type of metal native to his home of Centauri IV. He can whistle and control them and he's a pro at it!

* Yondu also comes with a bow. It's gold, just like the rest of his gear, though the string is molded in a plastic that's translucent, giving it more of a string-like appearance.

* Want an arrow to go with Yondu? Here you go! There's a little nob at the back so he can hold it better.

* The fin on Yondu's head is really tall with a neat wave to it. It comes separately, so you'll have to attach it.

The Negatives:

* I'm not sure that it should be this flat and smooth, though, right? Most comic images of Yondu show a it of texture, perhaps some sort of horizontal lines or shading, so this just seems off a bit.

* It might be due to being on an older body type but Yondu's knees feel a bit rubbery. Sometimes when he's standing n certain positions, the knees seem to give away a bit, causing him to tumble over.

Yondu is a pretty cool looking figure and a long awaited release in Marvel Legends for sure. He has an excellent headsculpt and some nice accessories but a few little extras like some alternate hands and maybe a whistling headsculpt would have been very welcome, especially since Yondu costs the same as a standard figure who would come packaged with a Build-a-Figure piece. He's a Good and a 1/2 figure and while he's not a must have, Guardians of the Galaxy fans are probably thrilled to add him to the shelf. A few ore little extras would have been welcome, though.
