Action Figure Review: X-23 from Marvel Legends Series: Deadpool and Wolverine by Hasbro

I'm not crazy familiar with everything X-Men comic related post 2000 but you'd have to be pretty oblivious to all things Marvel to not recognize how successful X-23, AKA Laura Kinney, has been as a character. Initially introduced in the 2003 X-Men: Evolution animated series as a clone of Wolverine, Laura appeared in the comics within a year and has now become even a recognizable character in the movies. First appearing in the movie Logan, Dafne Keen reprised the role of X-23 in Deadpool and Wolverine as one of "The Others" banished to the Void. Last year Hasbro released an updated version of the X-Force X-23 (packaged with Warpath) so technically they've released two X-23 within 12 months. That's pretty impressive and definitely seems to show that Hasbro sees the popularity and potential in the character. I received X-23 along with Cowboypool as a gift recently and I have to say I've been quite impressed with this series of figures. The unique sculpts and the amount of accessories with most figures is pretty good, definitely more impressive than most comic based Marvel Legends figures. Ready to check out X-23? Then join me after the break...

The Facts:

Height: 5 3/4ths inches

Articulation: Swivel/hinge ankles, boot swivels, double hinged knees, swivel thighs, ball-jointed hips, swivel waist, balljointed midtorso, swivel/hinge shoulders w/ balljoint sockets, swivel biceps, double hinged elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, balljointed neck, and a barbell jointed head.

Accessories: 4 swappable hands, 2 swappable heads, sunglasses, backpack, jacket shell, 2 wristbands, Juggernaut's helmet, and 2 toe claws.

Original Retail Price: $28 dollars

Comparison:

* Here's a quick shot of this movie based X-23 (left) next to the X-Force X-23 (right) from last year. I realized I have the movie Laura's knees bent a bit, but with her legs straight she's basically the same size as the comic version.

The Positives:

* If you didn't recognize the character from the film there's nothing that jumps out to identify her as a superhero. It's just a woman in her early 20s dressed in casual clothes. When you compare her to Dafne Keen's appearance as X-23 in Deadpool and Wolverine, though, it's pretty accurate. She's sporting the faded jeans, the tour shirt for the fictional band Savage, and a short grey jacket vest. She does have an "X" belt buckle, but you might not notice that at first. The print on both the belt buckle and the shirt look really neat and clean and the jacket definitely seems appropriately sized and fits the figure well. The sleeves are part of her shoulder, so they're not removable, thus there isn't any reason to take off the jacket.

* I think the portrait is pretty good and looks like Dafne Keen. X-23 has a pretty stoic a lot of the time and this figure captures it. You can see there's some attitude, sure, but she masks it fairly well. It's just amazing how the face printing has just changed how impressive portraits can be on 1/12th scale figures available at mass market retail.

* The second portrait doesn't necessarily show more emotion but it does seem to show more action. Laura's hair is blowing to her left and her head seems angled in preparation for a fight.

* Here's a closer look at X-23's jacket and the printing on her shirt. It really feels like the Marvel Legends team really brought their A-game here for a figure that I wouldn't think would have a ton of reuse potential. I do think the jacket itself might be reused from America Chavez, but that's just from looking at online images of the figure as I don't own the Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness America Chavez.

* These sunglasses are really cool. Laura wears them in the film (and I think in Logan, too) and they fit great. The pink color stands out, the lenses look excellent, and they are not falling off on either portrait. These are some of the best 1/12th scaled sunglasses I've seen.

* X-23 has swappable hands with gloves or hand wraps and some wrist covers for when you want to have her sport her claws. The claws are imbedded in her hand and aren't removable, but they also are nice and straight. Sometimes the Marvel Legends claws look uneven, especially with the removable claws, but these are great.

* X-23 also has foot claws! Besides having cool boots with lots of straps, she has curved, talon-like claws that pop out of her feet. The blades are removable in case you want her to have them hidden away. There's still a little slit there you can see but it's not crazy noticeable.

* How's the articulation? Not bad at all. I do think there are a couple places where the joints are stiff right out of the package but with a little movement and working the joints, everything turned out fine. Laura has pretty much every mainstream Marvel Legends joint including the thigh cuts and boot swivels, something that Hasbro has cut on some figures in other lines, plus the sockets of her shoulders are balljointed with a short barbell. She just has a standard waist swivel but her mid-torso balljoint works quite nicely.

* Besides the clawed hands you also get a pair of standard hands without any wraps or gloves.

* There's also a backpack included. It's a pretty nice sculpt, though there isn't any paintwork. This is actually reused from the Peter Parker and Ned Leeds two pack from Spider-Man Homecoming, interestingly enough. Has anyone else used this accessory? I do like that the straps fit around her arms rather than just plugging into a port on her back or something.

* In the film, X-23 cuts off Juggernaut's head to retrieve his mind shielding helmet so that Deadpool and Wolverine can use it to block Cassandra Nova's mental abilities. How cool is it that Juggs' helmet actually comes loose as an accessory?

The Negatives:

* My only negative with this figure is that the biceps feel a bit odd. When you're posing her arms, Laura's biceps seem like they want to pull out of her sleeves. It feels like they're a little loose, perhaps?

This version of X-23 is really fun and comes with some cool extras. I'm sure that there are quite a few collectors of the MCU figures who want to build The Others, so surely we'll get Elektra, Johnny Storm, and Gambit at some point, right? I think a few of those have even been leaked. Still, on her own X-23 is good. The biceps are a bit weak but everything else is really solid. The portraits are really good, too. She's a Great and a 1/2 figure overall. I'm not sure how many more of these I'm grabbing right now. Maybe Blade? I'm not completely sold on his portraits but maybe if I found him on sale...
