Action Figure Review: Jubilee from Marvel Legends Series: X-Men '97 by Hasbro

I told you more X-Men '97 reviews were coming, didn't I? Today I'm looking at Jubilee from the latest series of Marvel Legends Series X-Men '97 releases and, interestingly, this isn't Jubilee's standard costume from the series. Sure, she's got the yellow jacket but this isn't her Jim Lee era and animated series standard blue denim shorts and pink shirt with blue gloves and boots. Instead, this is the costume that she wears during the series finale when every character gets a costume change! For most of the main crew, their costume changes are more classic costumes. Jubilee, however, wears this costume based on her 2011 Wolverine & Jubilee look from after she became a vampire and started wearing black leather. Interestingly, Hasbro has released a version of Jubilee in this costume before, though she was a Build a Figure from a 2014 Toys 'R Us exclusive series, so her price has been pretty high for a few years. Jubilee in her "classic" outfit from X-Men '97 have been been released at least twice in recent years (once in the Caliban BAF series and once in the Hasbro Pulse VHS series) so this is a more unique version for folks who missed out on the original. As a kid I was so frustrated that we never had Jubilee (or Jean Grey) in the Toy Biz line until long after I was actively collecting them, so the fact that we're getting plenty of versions of the core characters just thrills me these days. Ready to check out one of the only three characters name checked in the theme song for the original animated series? Then join me after the break...

The Facts:

Height: 5 3/4ths inches

Articulation: Swivel/hinge ankles, boot swivels, double hinged knees, swivel thighs, ball-jointed hips, balljointed midtorso, swivel/hinge shoulders, bicep swivels, double hinged elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, and a barbell jointed head.

Accessories: 4 swappable regular hands, 2 plasma generating effects hands, and cup.

Non-Scalper Price: $26 to $28 dollars

The Positives:

* Even without the bright blue and pink clothing, Jubilee's still pretty recognizable. If you see someone in a yellow trench coat, it's either Jubilee, April O'Neil, or Dick Tracy. Funny story; I actually had a Dick Tracy trench coat as a kid but later, when I was into X-Men and was still pretty young (grade school) I'd run around in the trench coat and some massive sunglasses to mimic Jubilee's style. Crazy, right? Jubilee's coat is very bright and most of the details are smooth, matching the animated series look, though I don't think she'd look out of place in a comic display. I really like the purple collar of her black bodysuit as it adds a nice pop of color to stand out from the black and yellow.

* Jubilee's portrait is excellent and really captures her look and super cool hair. I'm also loving the glasses. I think we should have gotten two portraits as Jubilee is wonderfully expressive and would have really benefitted from an alternate look, but the portrait we have is one of the best in this series. She might have my favorite portrait from this series of figures. The face printing is great and she has a great little smirk on her face.

* Jubilee's articulation is pretty standard for most women in the line, though restricted a bit by her jacket. She doesn't have as much articulation as some other figures (no butterfly joints and no balljointed neck, but she does still have boot and thigh swivels. Everything is pinless here, so she's either a new sculpt or makes use of newer molds. With the swappable hands with her plasma firework effects, she is a lot of fun to pose and play around with. Definitely a step up from most other Jubilee figures from the past.

* Hasbro threw in six swappable hands for Jubilee. Four of them are pretty standard: A pair of gesturing hands, a right hand for holding her fast food/ food court styled cup, and a left hand for punching. Everything swapped easily enough and I didn't have any problems swapping the hands around.

* The other two are incredibly cool hands that show Jubilee projecting her firework-like plasma blasts. These are really nice and look far more like how Jubilee's energy blasts are usually depicted. It's nice to see some new energy effects rather that those simple swirl pieces that go over the wrists that Hasbro uses over and over.

* To show off Jubilee's chill mallrat vibe she's just casually standing around fighting Sentinels with one hand and using the other to hold a cold drink. What's she got in there? Soda? A milkshake? A smoothie, perhaps? The cup is fairly basic but the straw actually has the bendy straw curve on it.

The Negatives:

* Notice anything weird here? How about that the zipper on her torso, which should down to her waist, just kind of disappears. That's an odd choice on Hasbro's part which clearly seems to be the result of them just reusing the lower body. It just looks odd when you notice it, too.

It is pretty cool that Hasbro did go with a different look for Jubilee that a number of Marvel Legends collectors may not already have in their collections. It's not the most recognizable Jubilee look, sure, but I imagine we'll get another Jubilee at some point in the X-Men '97 line. How is she? She's alright. I like the figure but she definitely feels a bit light. She's a smaller figure as it is and an extra portrait or maybe some chili cheese fries (as an accessory, not a real pack in entrée) would have been welcome. It's definitely better than tracking down the 2014 BAF version but she still feels a bit lacking, especially with the new higher price point on these. She's kind of an Eh and a 1/2 figure. Not horrible, but not a must buy for folks not wanting the full team in this style or for fans who aren't massive Jubilee fans. I'm also a bit salty about the disappearing zipper. It just feels very careless on the part of the Legends team. Bummer.

Looking for more of Jubilee? I've also reviewed the Marvel Legends Series "Strike Team" 3-pack with Forge, Storm, and Jubilee.
