Action Figure Review: Bag of Heads from Dr. Malgam's Body Bags by ToadFrog

I reviewed four of the regular bagged figures from this line in late October and early November and while I had a couple more, I decided to skip ahead to the Bag of Heads. Have you ever purchased a bag of heads? Well, what you order is what you get here: A body bag filled with heads that can swap onto the various figures in the line. Since I last reviewed one of these sets, ToadFrog has come out and announced that they are partnering with Thin Air Brands to get Dr. Malgam's Body bags to retail shelves sometime in 2026. That's great news and it's nice to see the line having a future. I really like these figures though I wish we had more fully complete figures in the first series. This bag doesn't fully solve that problem but it does allow you to complete the Skeleton. This was sold as an add on for $25 during the Kickstarter campaign or as part of the Full Moon Special pledge level. Ready to check out this crazy mix of noggins for your buildable monsters? Then join me after the break...

The Facts:

Scale: Around 1/12th

Includes: 7 swappable heads and a fabric Body Bag.

Non-Scalper Price: $25 dollars or included as part of the Full Moon Special pledge.

The Positives:

* First up is the Blood Red Werewolf. If you have the standard set you already have the basic Werewolf portrait and you might even have the Midnight Werewolf figure, too. This one is cast in bright red plastic that reminds me of one of the companion ghosts from Kenner's The Real Ghostbusters line. You can use this with the Blood Red Assortment (a Kickstarter exclusive of Assortment #1 in this same translucent red) or have your standard Werewolf with a really bad sunburn.

* Next up is the Tropical Sea Creature, a variant of the standard Sea Creature head from Assortment #4. I know this is an aquatic being but with the orange color scheme he reminds me of Tomar-Re of the Green Lantern Corps. This is a really cool sculpt with some bright and vivid paintwork. I'm not sure there's any figure yet that fits this perfectly, so hopefully we'll more bodies next year.

* Next up is the Glow-in-the-Dark Frankenstein, a glowing take on the Frankenstein Monster. The glow looks really nice here with a strong, healthy glow. The standard Frankenstein head is in Assortment #2 but this one can function as a night light for you, so that's a bit of an advantage. There is a Glow-in-the-Dark version of Assortment #1 and you could certainly mix this in with that set or just have a Frankenstein Monster inspired by the Burger King Kids Universal Monsters Frankenstein.

* The first all new portrait in the set is Medusa. She looks excellent here and is one of the coolest portraits in this set. It's just a shame that we don't have any body or parts that match her yet. I do hope we eventually see some female bodies in this line as mix and match lines like this often leave them out. I remember Hasbro's various Hero Mashers never made any women from Star Wars or Marvel back when my daughter was younger and collecting those. Hopefully we can get some great women monsters from Dr. Malgam's Body Bags.

* Another new sculpt for this set is the Alien. It's a stylized but still classic feeling take on the traditional "Grey" alien. Though this one is blue. It's a grade shade of blue, though, and having those purple eyes really makes it stand out. I really like this portrait and it might be my favorite from the set. I really want to be able to assemble this guy so hopefully the rest of the Alien makes his way out.

* The Skeleton is a pretty desirable head from this set as you can fully build him with various parts from the sets and the stretch goals from the Kickstarter campaign. He's far more interesting than a regular schedule with lots of funky protrusions and spikes on his head. The skeleton also has a nice paint effect that makes him look a bit aged and weathered and far more interesting than just a plain white skeleton.

* The last portrait is the Cyber-Gorilla. While you can't build the full Cyber-Gorilla with what we have so far, you can create something with four of the six needed pieces. He reminds me a bit of Cy-Gor from Spawn, wouldn't you agree?

* The sales gimmick and packaging of the line utilizes a reusable fabric body bag. This is a pretty cool extra that both store your parts inside and can be used to hold other action figures. If you've just wanted a 1/12 sized body bag, here you go! It's durable and has a zipper so you can easily open and close it. The label is made to look like a toe tag and is attached by a plastic fastener.

* You can easily store the goodies inside with a very functional zipper. It's a neat accessory for the line and I could see different series using different concepts. A zombie or mutant series would be cool with orange body bags with a biohazard logo, for instance.

For seven portraits and the body bag, this was a nice add-on for the Kickstarter campaign. If you're collecting this line and enjoy it, this is a Great and a 1/2 set to mix and match the figures you have. The only thing I have to say that's negative about the line is that, thus far, there just aren't enough characters to fully build. Fortunately, it does seem like ToadFrog does have plans for the future of the line and the Kickstarter campaign won't just be a "one and done" release. When more figures arrive, I think I will appreciate this even more. Seven swappable portraits, though? That's a pretty nice score.
