Action Figure Review: Nemesis (Genocide) from Marvel Legends Series: X-Men by Hasbro

 


   After reviewing all six figures needed to build this figure over the past month or so, I'm finally ready to take a look at the figure Hasbro is calling Nemesis. I've been mistakenly calling him Holocaust in my other reviews, but that's not really correct. Holocaust is a son of Apocalypse from the Age of Apocalypse timeline who Hasbro (and Toy Biz) have called Nemesis before due to considering the name Holocaust to be too specific and offensive for a toy. Hasbro did release a Build-a-Figure of Holocaust called Nemesis in 2007 as part of a Walmart exclusive series (I still have the Camo Punisher from that series), but this figure, who they're also calling Nemesis, seems to be based on Genocide. Genocide is a newer character (first appearance 2011) who is also a son of Apocalypse and Famine (Autumn Rolfson), but from Earth-616. Genocide, AKA William Rolfson, can create energy bursts that are as hot as the son, generate radioactive plasma bursts, and cook every Hot Pocket in the frozen foods aisle with a snap of his fingers. The suit he's wearing keeps his powers in check, though. There's not much cooler than a flaming skeleton in a spacesuit, so this BAF is proving to be a pretty popular commodity. The Facts:

Height: 8 3/4ths inches

Articulation: Double swivel/hinge ankles, double hinged knees, thigh swivels, balljointed hips, balljointed mid-torso,  swivel/hinge shoulders, bicep swivels, double hinged elbows, swivel/ hinge left wrist, balljointed head, and hinged jaw.

Accessories: Helmet, hose, and 2 swappable left hands.

Non-Scalper Price: N/A; To build him you need to buy 6 figures: Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Husk, Marrow, Gambit, and Fabian Cortez.






The Positives:

* This guy is huge! Nemesis/ Genocide is a really sizeable BAF and definitely a nice, meaty accomplishment for collecting this whole series. This is a really strong series anyway, and since it was all mutants and X-Men related characters I didn't have to bother selling anyone off or sitting on figures I didn't want. This guy feels quite deluxe at just a bit under 9 inches and he looks great on display with other figures centered around him.





* It's not just that this guy is big; he's also just a really cool design. He's a great BAF since he's not a necessary A-list character or anything but he's cool enough to still sell a full series of figures, though if he were sold by himself I guarantee folks who don't usually collect Marvel Legends would want to snag this guy. His armor is a dark copper with lots of dents and dings on it. It's gotta be super strong, though, as this armored suit functions like an exoskeleton for Genocide and contains his insane level of energy within. The lighter copper/ almost orange striping across the suit really looks nice and gives the entire figure a more polished look. I'm also loving the flexible material that looks to be hidden beneath the armored panels. What is that stuff made out of that it's so strong?






* All that there is to William Rolfson's body is a skeleton, presumably because everything else has burned off. There are translucent flames surging out from the neck of his suit and a skeletal spine and skull. It's a great looking skull. It looks like it's be the size of a normal Marvel Legends character, so presumably the skeleton isn't that huge; just his massive armored exoskeleton. The sculpt looks excellent with lots of detail on the teeth and some dark paint apps for the holes in the skull.


* Not only is this a cool skull sculpt but Genocide's jaw is also articulated. You could totally make him act in a stop motion video, having him sing such hits as  "Burnin' for You" by Blue Oyster Cult, "I Melt With You" by Modern English, or "Hot in Herre [sic]" by Nelly.










* There's a giant helmet that fits very securely over Genocide's noggin, keeping him from accidently laying waste to everything around him. The dome and huge visor are really cool. That translucent visor has an amber colored tint and just really looks fantastic on the figure.









* Here's a closeup so you can appreciate the design and detail on the armor. Those coppery orange striped details really give me a bit of a Jack Kirby vibe, which I love.












* From the back you can see this guy has lots of hoses and gear that are presumably regulating something inside the suit.  Maybe those smokestack like protrusions even left off some of the pressure from the radioactive plasma energy Genocide emits? The yellow hose is a removable piece and it attaches one of the ports on his back (you can attach the hose to either port) with the cannon on his arm. 











* The arm cannon is a pretty cool weapon. I presume that hose is funneling some of his radioactive plasma to the arm cannon, allowing it to be fired as a beam. That's probably a more efficient weapon than just jumping out of the suit and killing everything in sight. 






* Overall, Genocide/ Nemesis has most of the same points of articulation as your average Marvel Legends figure and he's built pretty similarly, too. He's a bigger guy and feels pretty sturdy, so not every joint has the range of motion you'd find in a smaller, nimbler figure, but it's not a real negative. This guy is quite fun to mess around with and it's nearly impossible for him to just not look cool. His shoulders are not inhibited by his shoulder pads too much at all since the shoulder pads do have some give at their attachment point.  







* The cannon arm is what it is but Genocide's left hand does have two display options: A fist and a open grasping hand. They swap easily and do give you another display option for the big guy.








   Nemesis/ Genocide is a superb Build-a-Figure. He's an incredibly cool figure, noticeably larger than most other Marvel Legends, and he's part of an all X-Men comic themed series, so that makes picking him up easier as you're less likely to be buying figures you don't want. This guy is my favorite BAF since Bonebreaker. He's an Epic figure that's a real incentive to pick up this entire series, even if you weren't planning to already. The character might be fairly obscure but I could see this guy becoming quite popular in years to come just because of how cool he is.
