Action Figure Review: Gorr from Marvel Legends Series: Thor by Hasbro

I hadn't even heard of Gorr the God Butcher prior to his appearance in the trailers for Thor: Love and Thunder as I don't keep up much with modern Marvel comics, but from all I've heard he seems like a rather unique villain. Gorr first appeared in Thor: God of Thunder #1 back in 2013 and was created by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic. I liked Christian Bale's portrayal of Gorr in Thor: Love and Thunder quite a bit and I was almost tempted to pick up the movie based figure at some point to have a Gorr on my shelf but, fortunately, Hasbro put this figure up for preorder before I snagged the MCU version. Gorr the God Butcher is an Amazon exclusive and went up for preorder at the end of August. Originally his preorder arrival date was December 2023 but at some point it shifted to December 2022. That's a heck of a decrease in arrival time, right? 2022 was a big year for Gorr, so let's check him out after the break...

The Facts:

Height: 6 7/8ths inches

Articulation: Swivel/hinge ankles, calve swivels, double hinged knees, swivel thighs, balljointed hips, swivel waist, hinged mid-torso, swivel/hinge shoulders, bicep swivels, double hinged elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, and a barbell jointed head.

Accessories: 2 portraits, cloak, right hand, and swappable Necrosword right hand.

Non-Scalper Price: $30 dollars

The Positives:

* Gorr is a larger guy but not massive. He's built on a more regular body with most of his details painted on. There are lots of nodes and black lines covering his pale gray skin, maybe to represent the workings of All-Black the Necrosword on Gorr's person? He's not wearing much, just some skimpy black trunks, but from some of the pictures I've see of Gorr in the comics that seems to be about as much as he usually wears besides his cloak. Some pictures even make it look like he's not always sporting the trunks. Does he go full blown Doctor Manhattan?

* Gorr's headsculpt is excellent. He comes with two portraits, the first one being a more standard portrait with no hood. This one shows off Gorr's head tails. Gorr's a pretty fearsome looking dude and you know what he looks like? A cross between Voldemort and Bib Fortuna. Seriously, if those two were mixed together, you'd have Gorr. His eyes and teeth are excellent with fantastic detail.

* When he feels like being modest, Gorr wears a black robe that reveals a good deal of his body still. The robe is a separate piece that's made from plastic and which fits over Gorr's neck. Just pop off the head and put on the hooded head and you have a different look for Gorr. The ends of the cloak are sculpted to look kind of dynamic, so they're swirling around like tendrils.

* The hooded head is actually a bit creepier. While you can't see Gorr's teeth, his eyes look pretty intense here. The hood is a separate piece but it's not removable. There are no head tails poking out, either. You just have to assume they're back there, hidden under the back of the cloak.

* Gorr has the same articulation as most other Marvel Legends figures, so he's ready to pose and battle with your other figures. When he doesn't have his robe on he has a great range of motion since there's nothing to really impede his joints, but even with his robe on he's still plenty mobile.

* He's got some creepy feet, too. The toes are very animal-like.

* Gorr comes with the symbiote weapon "All-Black the Necrosword." It's actually permanently attached to a right hand that you can swap out onto Gorr's right arm. It's a unique looking blade and I'm presuming that it must change itself depending on it's host. Knull comes with the blade too, but it's a different design with more red tendrils.

Gorr turned out quite well and I'm quite glad that Hasbro released a comic version of a major MCU villain so close to his appearance in the film. For years that wasn't their MO; heck, often they didn't even release the film villains. The character selection in the Marvel Legend Series continues to be very respectable and Gorr was a good choice. Now, why he's a pricier figure than most, I don't know. He's a $30 dollar figure and he's a bit light on extras. I'm giving him a Good and a 1/2 There's a lot to like about him but it would have been nice to have gotten a few more extras packed in.

  1. I know nothing about this guy, other than what I saw in Bale's performance in the movie. This figure looks outstanding.

    1. The figure is very cool. Just lacking in extras for a "deluxe" release.

  2. Absolutely love this comic ver of Gorr. Loved the comic run as well, the whole concept of killing Thor across the various timelines was just mind blowing at the time. I just got him too and just like you I was THAT close of snatching the MCU Gorr due to Bale's excellent portrayal of him. I got mine on massive clearance (would you believe that...an Amazon exc on sale by my local Hasbro distributor?) but I think there's a flaw with his feet design. I think he's supposed to have the horse/hooves-type legs as per the comic run but if we can look past that, then I think this figure is perfect! A must-have for your Thor shelf me thinks.

    1. So I've seen some weird things with Gorr's feet, including images from the book where he looks to have two different feet. I really think Marvel was just inconsistent with his feet and Hasbro just had to stick to something.

Also, that's crazy that you got this new figure on sale. Well done!
