Action Figure Review: Qi'ra from Star Wars: The Black Series by Hasbro

Solo: A Star Wars Story has now hit theaters and my guess is that if you're reading this you've already scene the film. I liked it. Like any Star Wars film I definitely need take some time to think about it (I'll soon be podcasting about the film with The Reel Brad Bell on The Confirmed Epic Podcast) but at this point I think it's probably tied with Rogue One as my favorite Star Wars film of the Disney era. Solo may take the advantage, however, because it definitely seems like a film I could watch at a moments notice whereas I kind of have to be in the right mood to watch Rogue One. Anyways, let's talk about Qi'ra. Played by Emilia Clarke, Qi'ra was definitely one of the unknowns going into this film. We knew Han Solo, we knew Lando Calrissian, and we knew Chewbacca, but Qi'ra? Completely new character! I'll share some thoughts about the character at the end of the review but for now I'm going to focus on the figure. This figure represents Qi'ra in her outfit from Corellia which is essentially just the first few minutes of the movie. It wouldn't have been my first choice for a figure of the character but it turned out well. Let's check her out after the break...

Minifigure Review: Deadshot from DC Nano Metalfigs by Jada Toys

Finally I'm getting the chance to get into my most anticipated characters from DC Nano Metalfigs series 4! Series 4 had quite a few variants of characters (both new sculpts and repaints) but it was the excitement of some new Batman villains and Batfamily members that most appealed to me. Today I'm checking out Floyd Lawton, better known as Deadshot! Whether you know him best as a solo assassin, or as a member of the Secret Six, Checkmate, or the Suicide Squad, chances are you know him. Recently Deadshot has made on-screen appearances in both the DCEU film Suicide Squad and the animated Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay, so he's definitely had some major exposure. Jada Toys' figure is based on Floyd's look in the New 52 comics where he had a major role in that incarnation of the Suicide Squad. Ready for a closer look at this metal marksman? Then join me after the break...

Minifigure Review: Elsa from Kinder Joy: Frozen by Ferrero

The other day I noticed that Ferrero has put out some Frozen themed Kinder Joy eggs so, naturally, I had to pick one up for my daughter and one for me. We opened ours up last night and while my daughter snagged a Frozen Fever Anna, I nabbed Queen Elsa. Hot diggity dog! We both really dig Frozen and I think I was almost as excited to find these as my little one was when I gave them to her. I like candy and I like minifigures so this is a pretty great deal, right? There are also Jurassic World Kinder Joy so maybe I'll pick those up next. For now, however, I'm checking out Elsa in her iconic "Let is Go" pose. More after the break...

Minifigure Review: Aquaman (DC57) from DC Nano Metalfigs by Jada Toys

Series 4 of the DC Nano Metalfigs line offers up 12 new figures and this is the eighth one: Aquaman! Based on his appearance in the film Justice League where he was played by Jason Momoa, Aquaman adds another figure to Jada Toys' DCEU Justice League. Considering that Aquaman is slated for release in December, I'm sure we'll see more Aquaman merchandise over the next six or seven months, but right now this is what's available. Ready to check out this die-cast, die-hard ocean lover? Then join me after the break...

Something Has Survived!: Pteranodon from Jurassic World: Legacy Collection by Mattel

Other than the small Pteranodon that came with the original Kenner Alan Grant figure I've never owned a Jurassic Park branded Pteranodon until now. I recently picked up the Jurassic World: Legacy Collection figure from Target (the Legacy Collection is exclusive to Target) so now I have one in my collection. Do you know where all of my childhood flying dinosaurs came from? Tyco's Dino-Rider line. I had some of those dinosaurs which were quite impressive. So impressive, in fact, that around 1990 or so Tyco partnered with the Smithsonian Institution and released them (without their armor and weapons) as the Smithsonian Institution Dinosaur Collection. Of course, that's probably a collection for another day as, sadly, I don't think I still have any of those still around. I do have this new Jurassic World Pteranodon, though. Let's check it out after the break...

Something Has Survived!: Pachycephalosaurus from Jurassic World: Legacy Collection by Mattel

I have dinosaur fever, y'all! Today I'm checking out another dinosaur review from Mattel's Jurassic World: Legacy Collection line and it's the Pachycephalosaurus. I had the Jurassic Park: The Lost World Pachycephalosaurus when I was a kid and this one kind of reminded me of it. I do miss the dino capture gear that Kenner included with many of their figures as it definitely gave the figures a little something extra. Still, Mattel's efforts are pretty cool and I can appreciate these for the fun, inexpensive action figures that they are. Let's take a closer look at the Pachycephalosaurus after the break...

Minifigure Review: Robin Tim Drake (DC56) from DC Nano Metalfigs by Jada Toys

I'm over halfway through the DC Nano Metalfigs series 4 reviews now! Today I'm looking at the third and final repaint in the series, Robin. The checklist on the back of the package specifically labels this as Tim Drake, so that's cool. The costume looks right so I buy it. Tim Drake has had the alternate identity of Red Robin over the past few years and has used way more red, yellow, and black rather than green in his costume. Robin was originally included in the Batcave Nano Scene set so it's nice to have a single packed version available for folks just wanting a Robin. Interestingly, Tim Drake is still the only one of the Robins that we've received, although it sounds like Jada Toys has a Nightwing coming soon in new 20-pack but we still need Damian Wayne and Jason Todd, preferably as the Red Hood. Heck, I really want a Stephanie Brown, too, although I'd prefer her as Spoiler. Anyways, let's check out this new Tim Drake as Robin Nano Metalfigure after the break...

Minifigure Review: Harley Quinn (DC55) from DC Nano Metalfigs by Jada Toys

I'm still slowly but surely making my way through the fourth series of DC Nano Metalfigs from Jada Toys and today I'm checking out the second of three repaints in the line: Harley Quinn. The original Harley Quinn Nano Metalfig was released last summer in the first series of figures but, unfortunately, she had a lot of problems. While this is mostly just a grayscale repaint of that figure, it turns out that Jada Toys made some improvements here with cleaner paintwork and better molding. Want to take a look at this very cool Black and White Harley Quinn? Then join me after the break...

Statue Review: Supergirl Returns from DC Comics Bishoujo by Kotobukiya

Can you believe that it has been about 7 years since Kotobukiya releases their original Supergirl statue in the DC Comics Bishoujo line? While there are plenty of other characters I'd like to see them tackle before getting into more second editions (Mera, Cheetah, Bumblebee, Killer Frost, and Hawkgirl would be nice), it definitely makes sense to release a new version of Supergirl. The earlier figures in this line have definitely jumped up in price and, with Supergirl's current popularity, she definitely deserves a more easily available product for her fans. Officially called Supergirl Returns, this statue started shipping out within the last month or so and can still be easily found. Ready for a closer look at this one? Then join me after the break...

Minifigue Review: The Joker (DC54) from DC Nano Metalfigs by Jada Toys

Jada Toys' DC Nano Metalfigs line definitely has a pretty diverse offering of characters from a diverse array of different DC properties: Comics (Pre-Crisis, Post Crisis, New 52, and Rebirth), Movies, TV Shows, and Cartoons. Today I'm looking at the Joker (DC54) from the fourth series of figures. Based on Cesar Romero's portrayal of the Joker from the 1966 Batman TV Series, the Joker adds another figure to a cool little subset of characters from the show that Jada Toys is building (we've also received Batman and the Penguin). Let's take a look at this tiny metal version of the Clown Prince of Crime after the break...

Something Has Survived!: Velociraptor from Jurassic World: Legacy Collection by Mattel

The Jurassic World: Legacy Collection seems to be exclusive to Target. While Target seems to be doing a pretty good job of keeping the toys in stock, it's a shame that these aren't available as it's a pretty cool line of toys featuring characters and dinosaurs from the previous Jurassic Park films in the series, including lots of toys based on the original film. Today I'm checking out a figure I picked up last week at the same time I grabbed Robert Muldoon: The Velociraptor! There are quite a few Velociraptors in the Jurassic World toy line but I really like this one as it looks the most like the classic raptor from the original film. Plus, it features a leaping action feature. Leaping lizards? Not quite, but you get the idea, right? This figure is larger than the Attack Pack dinosaurs and comes in an open air box so you can get a feel for the toy before you buy it. Let's take a closer look at the Velociraptor after the break...

Minifigure Review: Wonder Woman (DC53) from DC Nano Metalfigs by Jada Toys

The next few days should have a nice peppering of figures from series 4 of the DC Nano Metalfigs line from Jada Toys. Today I;m checking out figure #53, Wonder Woman. Jada Toys calls this "Rebirth" Wonder Woman, probably due to the presence of the cape. This Wonder Woman is a repaint of Wonder Woman #4 that was released on a single card in series 1, in a 5-pack, and in the first 20-pack. Wonder Woman currently has four figures in the line putting her in second place for character with the most figures in the line (of course, Batman is #1 with between and 11 and 13 figures, depending on whether or not you count Batman Beyond and Thomas Wayne). While we're all still waiting for a Gal Gadot based Wonder Woman, let's check out this version after the break...

Something Has Survived!: Robert Muldoon from Jurassic World: Legacy Collection by Mattel

It's time for another review from Mattel's Jurassic World line. Well, actually this one is from the Jurassic World: Legacy Collection, a sub-line that includes humans, dinosaurs, and vehicles from the original films and some of the sequels. I'm not completely sold on what Mattel is offering here but I have enough nostalgia for Jurassic Park to pick up a few of the figures I run across. So far the only human figure I've grabbed is Robert Muldoon, the game warden of Jurassic Park. It's tough for me to pick a favorite character from Jurassic Park and as a kid I simultaneously went back and forth between pretending I was Alan Grant, Ian Malcom, and Robert Muldoon. To be completely honest, to this day I still can't run through a wooded area without pretending I'm Ellie Sattler, either. I think it's safe to say that Jurassic Park is still one of my favorite films and similar to Alan Grant's thoughts on the Triceratops, it was my favorite as a kid and I still love it today. Anyways, Muldoon was definitely one of my favorites. I remember how excited I was when it was revealed in the Topps comic book series that he didn't die after all. Sadly, Bob Peck passed away in 1999 and thus we've never been able to see the character have a return in the film universe. Now you can create whatever adventures you want with this figure, though. Let's check him out after the break...

Road to Solo: Lando Calrissian from Star Wars: The Black Series Phase III by Hasbro

 "Hello..what have we here?"

Why, it's a new Lando Calrissian action figure! Last year Hasbro released the first Lando Calrissian figure in the Black Series and it's taken them another year to release the second: Lando Calrissian as played by Donald Glover from the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story. Donald Glover seems like perfect casting for a young Lando Calrissian and he certainly seems ready to bring the same charm, suaveness, and charisma to the new film that Billy Dee Williams brought to the Original trilogy. I'm currently reading the Last Shot novel by Daniel Jose Older and so far I think Older has nailed Lando's "voice" in the text of the books. I have high hopes that Donald Glover will do the same in Solo and, looking at the trailers and such, I don't think I will be disappointed. I do have to say that I have some disappointments with this figure, however, and those are due to two quality control issues. I can only think of a couple of other Black Series figures that have given me true problems, so it's a bit unusual for one figure to have two. Let's check out the action figure and see how it fairs after the break...

Something Has Survived!: Dilophosaurus (Attack Pack) From Jurassic World by Mattel

Thanks to a review by Alexx over at Toys and Tomfoolery I had to start searching for Mattel's Jurassic World line, particularly this Dilophosaurus. Mattel has released a lot of product for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (although they oddly are just calling the toyline Jurassic World) and I'm digging these smaller sized action figure styled dinosaurs. As I mentioned in my review of the Hot Wheels Armored Acton Truck I haven't picked up a Jurassic Park toy since 1997 prior to these new releases (other than one of Hasbro's Heroes dinosaurs for my daughter a couple of years back) but I'm really digging these. The Dilophosaurus is one of my favorite animals from Jurassic Park and was absolutely the first one I wanted to hunt down. These figures do remind me quite a bit of the original Kenner figures although they are in a smaller, nearly 1/18th sized scale. The smallest single packed dinosaurs from the mainline are called Attack Pack and they feature some limited articulation. Let's check out the Dilophosaurus after the break...

Minifigure Review: Superman (DC52) from DC Nano Metalfigs by Jada Toys

I'm still really just beginning to make my way through series 4 of Jada Toys DC Nano Metalfigs and today I'm checking out figure #52 in the series: Superman from the film Justice League. Series 2 kicked off the Justice League roster with two figures from the Justice League team, Tactical Suit Batman and Flash, and series 4 continued by offering Superman, Cyborg, and Aquaman. Wait! Where is Wonder Woman? We have yet to receive a DCEU Wonder Woman of any kind (although she is the second most produced character in the line)! What gives? Anyway, this review is about Superman. We've received two previous Superman figures, Rebirth and New 52, so this one offers us something a bit different. Let's check out the Justice League Superman after the break...

Action Figure Review: Batman: Ascending Knight from One:12 Collective: DC Universe by Mezco

Two things are clear with Mezco and their One:12 Collective line: Mezco loves Batman and collectors love Batman because we are now getting yet another Batman in the One:12 Collective line. While previous releases have been based on specific outfits from The Dark Knight Returns or from the film Batman V. Superman, this is the first Batman figure that feature's Mezco's own take on the character. To be honest, while all of those previous One:12 Collective Batman figures, this was the one I have been looking forward to the most. I like the idea of Mezco taking multiple versions of a character and creating something that is unique while still being familiar. For Batman, however, just one figure won't do as Mezco is planning a "trilogy" of Batman figures from different periods in the crime fighter's career. First up is Ascending Knight Batman which is Mezco's take on a First Appearance/ Year One Batman. I really dig it. It's still clearly Batman and is packed with gadgets, but the gadgets are kind of old school. While he looks modern, he feels like he could have stepped out of another era. I've been reading a lot of 1940s era Batman stories lately (check out the excellent Batman: The Wars Years 1939-1945 and Batman in the Forties) and I can definitely see elements of the inspiration for this figure in those early stories, Frank Miller's Batman: Year One, and even in the Tim Burton directed 1989 Batman. Those are strong sources of inspiration, if you ask me. Mezco has four different versions of this figure available but this is the standard, definitive version (there is also a Toy Fair 2018 all black version, a Mezco Batman Day 2017 Black and gold version, and an upcoming PX exclusive blue and grey version) and the one I'm going to start my reviews with, as I also have the Batman day version. Let's check out Batman: Ascending Knight after the break...

Minifigure Review: Batman Beyond (DC51) from DC Nano Metalfigs by Jada Toys

Time for another review from Jada Toys' super cool DC Nano Metalfigs line: Batman Beyond! Batman Beyond is a completely new sculpt that shows off Terry McGinnis in his hi-tech Batsuit from Neo-Gotham. While Jada Toys has offered a lot of Batman variants in this line, I'm technically considering Batman Beyond a new character since, typically, Bruce is not in the suit. While the animated series is quickly approaching it's 20th anniversary the storyline still continues with the excellent DC Rebirth series. Ready for a slick, futuristic Batman? Then join me after the break...

Road to Solo: Chewbacca from Star Wars: The Black Series Phase III by Hasbro

The Solo: A Star Wars Story product has rolled out a lot more haphazardly than the previous product launches for the new Disney films. Street dates were unclear, distribution is even spottier than usual, and it is very unclear as to which exclusives are available at which retails. Perhaps the most easily found exclusive is this very cool Chewbacca that you can purchase at Target. I found mine fairly easily last week and, from what other collectors are saying, you shouldn't have much trouble either. I was really excited for this one because it actually offers a slightly different look for Chewbacca. In the past we've had Chewbacca with snow on his fur, C-3PO on his back, or various chains (both in disguise as Boushh's prisoner and in disguise in manacles on the Death Star) but rarely do we get something feels like a new uniform. Having Chewbacca with a completely new bandolier and goggles almost gives me the same feeling as the 1996 Chewbacca in Snoova disguise figure from the POTF2 Shadows of the Empire line. I really like this figure and I'm excited to talk more about him after the break...

Road to Solo: Han Solo from Star Wars: The Black Series Phase III by Hasbro

We're just a few weeks away from the impending release of Solo: A Star Wars Story and it's time to check out one of the big guns: Han Solo himself! I think one of the things many Star Wars fans never really prepared themselves for was to see one of the Original Trilogy's big three recast. Other than technically seeing Luke and Leia as babies in Revenge of the Sith, Alden Ehrenreich is the first of the main three to truly be portrayed by a different actor. While Solo seems to have had a troubled production history, everything we've seen over the past 4 months has me very, very optimistic about the film. I'm hoping for a slick, fast-paced caper film set in a galaxy far, far away and, hopefully, Ehrenreich is able to pull off leading it up. Only one figure of this younger version of Han has been announced for the Black Series and this is it. Let's check out this new version of Han Solo after the break...

Something Has Survived!: Armored Action Truck from Matchbox: Jurassic World by Mattel

I couldn't tell you the last time I bought a Jurassic Park toy. Maybe in 1997 when the Lost World was released? The original Jurassic Park is one of my favorite films and while I definitely have enjoyed most of the films in the series I just haven't picked up that much merchandise from it since 1997. Nostalgia is a powerful tool, however, and while on a recent trip to Target I stumbled upon the very cool Matchbox Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom cars. I'm not much of a toy car collector (other than the occasional Batmobile) but these Jurassic Park vehicles definitely appealed to me. I picked up two of the five packs, which I'll get around too in the next week or so, but for now I'm checking out the only single packed vehicle I bought: The Armored Action Truck. Mattel has released this as a full sized vehicle in the regular line, too, where it's called the Gyrosphere Blast. I'm assuming that means we'll see this cool looking vehicle in the film then, huh? Let's take a quick look at this truck after the break...

Road to Solo: Dewback/ Sandtrooper from Star Wars: The Black Series Phase III by Hasbro

Sorry for the lack of reviews lately, folks! Due to some technical problems behind the scenes things have been a bit slow lately and I have a stack of toys piling up on my desk! Today I'm reviewing a really cool set that Hasbro released alongside the new Solo: A Star Wars Story product last month: The Dewback and Sandtrooper set! While it's not from the new film, I doubt you'll find many Star Wars collectors who will argue with the inclusion of a Dewback in the line. While the Dewback is completely new, the Sandtrooper is mostly just a repaint. Hasbro has released quite a few Sandtroopers in the Black Series thus far: The classic orange pauldron wearing Sandtrooper was released in the first series of Phase I figures back in 2013 while the enlisted Sandtrooper was released in Phase II and the Sandtrooper Sgt. was part of an Entertainment Earth exclusive Phase III 4-pack. Included with the Dewback is a mounted Sandtrooper, sometimes called the Desert Sands Detachment Sandtrooper) based on the Sandtrooper from the Power of the Force II Dewback and Sandtrooper set. He adds some value to the set, though, and its nice to have another Sandtrooper as they are just so darn cool. Ready for a closer look at these guys? Then join me after the break...

Minifigure Review: Armored Batman (DC25) from DC Nano Metalfigs by Jada Toys

It has been a few days since I last served up a review, hasn't it? Well have no fear, friends! It's about to get crazy! I just received the Batman Day 2017 variant Ascending Knight Batman in the mail, I have some more Solo: A Star Wars Story action figures to review, and I just received a complete set of series 4 of my beloved Jada Toys DC Nano Metalfigs fig. Series four includes twelve figures total with nine new sculpts and three repaints. Armored Batman is one of the brand new sculpts. Each figure in this line is numbered and while the other figures in this series are numbered 51-61, Armored Batman is numbered #25. Why's that? Probably because this sculpt has been floating around for a year or more and has been shown off a few times but only now has Jada Toys inserted him into the line. He's actually the only Batman (unless you count Batman Beyond) in the series, which is pretty interesting considering that about 1/4th of the line consists of Batman variants (Seriously; I count about 13 Batman variants and around 60 figures thus far). Armored Batman is based on the BvS Armored Batman costume and completes the BvS trio along with regular Batman and Knightmare Batman. Let's check out this armored version of the Caped Crusader after the break...
