Today I'm very excited to check out Fang-Or from Masters of the Universe Origins, a figure that was sold exclusively through Mattel Creations a few months back. Fang-Or first appeared in the Masters of the Universe Classics era minicomic "The Second Ultimate Battleground" based on a concept by Scott Neitlich and designed by Axel Gimenez and quickly became a pretty popular guy. He really does look like he'd fit right in with the rest of the vintage Snake Men. Super7 made him in their Masters of the Universe Classics continuation line but with the focus on the Snake Men for 2023, Mattel has now released him in Origins. This guy sold out pretty fast so hopefully he'll get a re-release like a few of the previous hard to obtain figures have had. Ready to check out Fang-Or? Then let's check him out after the break...
The Facts:
Height: 5 3/4ths inches
Articulation: Swivel/ hinge ankles, boot swivels, swivel/hinge knees, balljointed hips, swivel waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, swivel/hinge elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, and a barbell jointed head.
Accessories: 2 sets of fangs, sword, armor, wrench, and minicomic.
Non-Scalper Price: $20 dollars
The Packaging:
* Fang-Or has the collector friendly packaging which features a blister that wraps around the cardboard backer. Other than clipping the tiny ties that hold Fang-Or onto the tray, everything else is collector friendly and easy to open and reseal.
* Fang-Or has a fantastic vintage Masters of the Universe look. While he reuses some parts, like King Hiss' arms and legs, he has lots of new parts, too. His removable armor is really cool with twin snake designs coming down from over the shoulders onto his chest. He's also sporting some unique and nifty wrist guards and greaves. He has green skin and his green, brown, and gold color scheme just works so well for a member of the Snake Man.
* Fang-Or is a dangerous looking fellow with two smaller fangs in the middle of his mouth and two massive fangs on the sides. Yikes! His mouth is open and ready to strike out at the Heroic Wars. Or the Evil Warriors. Or the Evil Horde. The Snake Men don't really get along with anyone, do they?
* Fang-Or's fangs are supposed to extend out to a wildly oversized length. The small fangs are one removable piece and can pop out to be replaced by these longer fangs. They are pretty menacing, right?
* Here's a shot of Fang-Or's belt and the super-cool greaves he's sporting. The MOTUC figure had greaves reused from Chief Carnivus, but I don't recognize these greaves off hand.
* The MOTU Origins figures are built like the vintage toys but with modern articulation. While their bulky frames make the articulation a bit clumsy, they do feel like an evolution of the vintage line. Imagine what you would get if you mixed a vintage figure with a MOTUC figure. They're quite fun to play with and they feel very sturdy. They're also modular and can be easily separated to make your own lazy boy customs!
* Fang-Or includes a sword similar to the one MOTUC figure had, though it's much simpler in design and simply molded in silver plastic. It's a pretty menacing looking weapon.
* The MOTUC Fang-Or also came with three tools since he's a blacksmith and inventor. This guy only comes with a wrench, though. It is pretty interesting and kind of looks like a snake. The ergonomic grip is like a tail while the jaw looks like a snake's mouth, complete with an eye.
I'm loving how deep Mattel has gone with the Snake Men this year and I'm really hoping that they select another faction for this level of treatment next year. Fang-Or is an excellent Origins figure and it's nice to see him get some recognition outside of MOTUC now. It's really fun to see some of the characters created for MOTUC make their way into other areas of MOTU and Fang-Or just has a great look and gimmick. He gets a Great and a 1/2 from me for sure. Those swappable fangs might look like walrus tusks but they're still incredibly intimidating!

* Fang-Or comes with a minicomic and, wow, it is absolutely wild. The story is absolutely insane for a 6-page comic and feels like it should be a much, much longer comic. Still, good art and it's a fun inclusion, but the story is like a teaser trailer rather than a full story.

The greaves are from the Origins version of 200X Skeletor and have previously been reused for Snake Armour Skeletor.
ReplyDeleteAhh, good catch. I didn't notice that.
