It's no secret that I collect Masters of the Universe stuff, right? I try to mix a lot of newly released product into 31 Days of Toy Terror and this year Skeletor is definitely showing up a few times. Today I'm checking out the 200x inspired Skeletor figure from series 9 of Mattel's Masters of the Universe Origins. Based on the Skeletor action figure from the 2002 Masters of the Universe revival, this guy still maintains the Masters of the Universe Origins aesthetic but features a new portrait and some new accessories which capture the unique style of that era. I reviewed the 200x He-Man back in August so now it's time to give the most powerful man in the universe his fearsome foe. Let's check out Skeletor after the break...
Height: 5 3/4ths inches
Articulation: Swivel/ hinge ankles, boot swivels, swivel/hinge knees, balljointed hips, swivel waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, swivel/hinge elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, and a double balljointed head.
Accessories: Harness, belt sword, staff, and minicomic.
Non-Scalper Price: $16-$19 dollars
* I love the colors on this rendition of Skeletor. The shades of blue and purple look great together and the black and red highlights really make this an impressive looking figure while still keeping the simpler, retro aesthetic of MOTU Origins. Skeletor's sporting all new shin guards and a new belt. He's pretty incredible!
* I like the headsculpt. It's not y favorite Origins headsculpt for Skeletor (that'd be the Alfredo Alcala inspired headsculpt from the Rise of Evil 2-pack) but this might be my second favorite. The fully hood looks pretty cool, especially if you use the cape from Keldor from the Rise of Evil 2-pack. The eyes are excellent, though, and so are the teeth. He's pretty intimidating!
* Skeletor has his classic armor with some nice paint applications (removable) and this cool new belt that captures the look of the 200x Skeletor figure.
* The MOTU Origins figures are built like the vintage toys but with modern articulation. While their bulky frames make the articulation a bit clumsy, they do feel like an evolution of the vintage line. Imagine what you would get if you mixed a vintage figure with a MOTUC figure. They're quite fun to play with and they feel very sturdy.
* Skeletor comes with his unique sword from the 200x figure that was originally intended to be the combined Power Sword in the Four Horsemen's early concepts for the reboot. Here's it's a single piece but with a cool sculpt and a sweet metallic purple color. That's a nice looking sword!
* Skeletor also comes with his Havoc Staff. I believe it's the same mold we've seen multiple times but it's also metallic purple here, making it a bit more eye-catching.
* I'm never going to turn down a minicomic and I love that Mattel brought them back for Origins. This one features the characters from this series of figures as well as Sorceress, Sun-Man, and a giant Cthulhu-like creature.
* They're also modular and can be easily separated to make your own lazy boy customs!
* Unfortunately, I don't know what the comic is called or what's going on because the comic has no word balloons. Apparently this is the way the minicomics are handled on the multi-lingual packaging versions, and somehow I managed to get that one. Nothing wrong with multi-lingual packaging but it sucks to get half of a comic book. I ordered mine through a standard US based e-tailer, so I'm now sure why Mattel shipped them this version of the figures.
Skeletor/ Keldor is one of my favorite villains of all time and he has his own review archive! Check out Snake Mountain for all of my reviews of the Evil Lord of Destruction who, by his own admission, "Is not nice!"

ReplyDeleteI love the 200x looks for these guys. They're so cool and while I wasn't young when they originally came out (around my senior year of high school/ freshman year of college, I'm still oddly nostalgic for them.
