Wrapping Up 2021: Stinkor from Masters of the Universe Origins by Mattel

I'm close to wrapping up 2021 releases and I'm continuing to check out the sixth series of Masters of the Universe Origins figures, most of which I received for Christmas. Today I'm looking at Stinkor, the Evil Master of Odors. I loved Stinkor as a kid and I'm excited to see him in Origins. I recently reviewed the Masterverse Stinkor based on his appearance in Masters of the Universe: Revelation and I still think that was one of the best figures of last year. Is the Origins Stinkor quite as good as that figure? Let's take a look and see after the break...

The Facts:

Height: 5 3/4ths inches

Articulation: Swivel/ hinge ankles, calve swivels, swivel/hinge knees, balljointed hips, swivel waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, swivel/hinge elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, and a double balljointed head.

Accessories: Armor, shield, and minicomic.

Non-Scalper Price: $16-$18 dollars
Comparison:

* The Origins Stinkor is on the left while the vintage Stinkor is on the right. Man, my vintage Stinkor is a little rough. I need to pick up a new figure (the accessories and armor are good, though) at some point. That's not my original childhood version, sadly. Anyways, the figures are quite similar though the orange on the vintage version is lighter than the darker orange of the Origins Stinkor. Otherwise, they look fairly similar.

The Positives:

* Stinkor is essentially a repainted Mer-Man with Mekaneck's armor, just like the vintage figure was. It's amazing what a color change does with these figures, isn't it? The black and white looks really nice here and the bright orange and red definitely further differentiates the sculpt. We haven't heard any word on Mekaneck in Origins yet (hopefully soon) but now that his armor is here he seems like a lock for the line.

* Wow! The paint job on Stinkor really makes him look different from Mer-Man. I honestly had to look a few times to convince myself it is the same portraits. Besides having his face hidden behind the mouthpiece of the armor, the colors are just quite striking, especially those bright yellow eyes. He's quite creepy looking

* The MOTU Origins figures are built like the vintage toys but with more modern articulation. While their bulky frames make the articulation a bit clumsy, they do feel like an evolution of the vintage line. Imagine what you would get if you mixed a vintage figure with a MOTUC figure. They're quite fun to play with and they feel very sturdy.

* They're also modular and can be easily separated to make your own lazy boy customs!

* Does Stinkor actually smell? Yes, yes he does. It's not as strong as you might hope (or perhaps I should say it's not as strong as you might have feared) but he does have a bit of a pungent odor to him. The picture on the back showing a little kid sniffing Stinkor is hilarious, by the way. It's not as strong as the vintage figure (which reeked of patchouli) but it's a nice touch nonetheless.

* Stinkor's classic weapon is a blue shield and it's packaged here. It has a solid handle for him to hold and he can use it in either his left or right hand. Maybe Stinkor just starts spraying his odor attack and walks forward, shield raised, into battle. Once he gets close enough you're a goner.

*  Each figure in the series also comes with a mini comic. Yes, an actual minicomic. Everybody gets the same comic but it's a cool way to familiarize kids picking up these figures with the characters.

The Negatives:

* I know the idea of this line to to capture the look and feel of the vintage line but I really appreciate when little fixes are made. One fix that I wish Mattel had made is giving Stinkor's teeth a paint hit. He really needs some paint on his teeth to give them some definition, right? He'd look even better with a bit more deco.
Stinkor turned out to be a Great figure. He's not as nice as the Masterverse Stinkor by any means but he is less expensive and he actually smells. He's cheap and stinky. He really is quite fun and Mattel did a nice job updating him. I especially like the fact that the armor on these guys is sturdier than the often brittle vintage armor. Now that we have Stinkor, can Mekaneck be far behind? I'm sure he could be a standard release but he'd make a heck of a deluxe release too with extra neck parts and maybe even an extra portrait. Mekaneck unmasked, perhaps?

    1. I think he's still shipping so hopefully you find one if you're looking for him. He's quite fun. And, yes, Origins has been really fun this year. I was lukewarm on it in 2020 but it has been incredible in 2021.

  2. Yeah, the stink sprayer is a nice addition for Stinkor. I'm surprised Origins didn't give him one but with the two heads, etc, he still turned out nice.
