When Funko listed the exclusives for the Funko Virtual Con Spring 2021 earlier this month I was able to order both of the Vinyl SODA figures available: Kobra Khan and Man-At-Arms. When mine arrived in the mail I was thrilled to discover that I actually received Battle Mode Kobra Khan, the limited chase variant. Of course, knowing that I was able to order the standard figure for retail price or less made acquiring the garden variety Kobra Khan a pretty easy sell and I scooped him up shortly after getting my exclusive version. How's the regular Kobra Khan? Let's check him out after the break...
The Facts:
Comparison:
* The standard Kobra Khan is on the left while the chase variant Battle Mode Kobra Khan is on the right. What's different? The presence of the hood on Battle Mode Kobra Khan. The head looks like it's made from two or three separate pieces and the chase variant has a different upper part. Other than that these are exactly the same. Hey! I get to reuse most of my previous! Go me!
* I'm loving Kobra Khan! Like the rest of the line he's a simple, solid vinyl figure but the style is just so appealing! Since he doesn't have the same style of eyes as the rest of the figures he doesn't seem as stylized but he still fits in well with the rest of the crew. The balance is great on these, too, and they stand together beautifully.
* I love the cans these come in! The soda can design is so incredibly cool and makes for a rather unique display piece on a shelf. Kobra Khan soda would definitely be greenish, so maybe like a green apple soda? I love apple soda (I spent some time in Mexico between high school and college and it was very prominent there) and a bright green apple would be amazing. Kobra Khan did appear a few times in the Filmation series (where he's referred to as a Repton) so Funko used his appearance there for the art. The can displays all of the expected labels while the back shows off the figure and includes all of the legal info, etc. The top of the can separates so you could use the can to store trinkets as well, and it's even sculpted to look like the top of a soda can. It's made from a much more durable metal than your average soda can, too, so it's quite a nice collectible.
* Inside the can is a round, sturdy cardboard disc. It's kind of like a
POG, though a bit larger. On the front is Kobra Khan's head while
the back has the figure's name and the run amount listed.
* I honestly prefer these to POP! vinyls as I love the way the harder vinyl used here captures the details. The proportions, while still stylized, are really appealing too. This is just a fantastic, fun rendition of Kobra Khan in plastic. The paintwork is neat and clean and the work on the orange ridges on his chest have some fantastic green highlights, a paint app that seems more complex than I'd expect on a figure in this style.
* Kobra Khan has a hollow mouth with some pretty incredible fangs and some seriously snaky eyes. He doesn't have his hood up on this figure but you can still see all of his scales and such.
* Kobra Khan comes equipped with his pistol, which was just a more
orange version of Zodac's pistol. The sculpt is great and it captures
the look of the vintage toy's accessory quite well. I wonder when we'll
get Zodac? I hope Zodak isn't a chase variant of Zodak since he's a
completely separate character. That would be really cold, Funko. Don't
do that!

I almost like the soda cans more than the figures.
ReplyDeleteThe cans really have turned out nice. I've collected a couple other lines that used metal packaging like this and usually you only display one of the packages since they're all the same. Since Funko made each can unique they're definitely more thrilling and less generic than most packaging!
