Wrapping Up 2025: Seymour "Sci-Fi" Fine from G.I. Joe: Classified Series by Hasbro

I only have a few 2025 G.I. Joe: Classified Series releases that I'm still planning to review and there is no way I'm leaving out Sci-Fi. While General Hawk v2 was my first G.I. Joe from the A Real American Hero line, Sci-Fi was my second. I don't think he has too many fans who would count him as their favorite Joe (he's not even on of my favorites) but I'm nostalgic for the guy since he was my second Joe and likely one of my earliest action figures. Sci-Fi was the second laser trooper in the line after Flash (who still isn't in the Classified Series yet, though he's been rumored to come out about every year) but it seems that he was originally intended to be a second version of Flash. There were a few figures in the line that seemed like they could have been designed as updated versions of the Original 13 (Short-Fuze/ Downtown, Grunt/Footloose) but by making most figures new characters in ARAH it seems Hasbro kept the line fresher. Sci-Fi is known for his distinctive bright green jumpsuit which does stand out, something that became important as the line continued on. Back in the 1980s, moms were considered to be the "toy buyers" for their kids and starting to offer more unique looks and visibly different figures was a way to clearly indicate that the kids didn't already have this one. It also does lend to his science fiction aesthetic. While Hasbro has still held fairly close to the vintage design for Sci-Fi in the Classified Series, they've also borrowed liberally from the 30th Anniversary version of the figure who really upgraded the vintage design a good bit and toned down the neon green. Ready to check out Seymour "Sci-Fi" Fine? Then join me after the break...

Comparison:

* "Science Fiction- Quadruple Feature!"

Here's a shot of four different Sci-Fi figures from left to right: My original childhood vintage Sci-Fi, the Classified Series Sci-Fi, a vintage Sci-Fi complete and in great condition, and the 2011 30th Anniversary Sci-Fi. All very similar, sure, but a lot of the redesign for the Classified Series seems to have been done for the 30th Anniversary release.

The Positives:

* I really like Sci-Fi's design as the Classified Series design takes what the 30th Anniversary figure did (mutes the neon green, makes the figure seem less bulky, and upgrades the detail on the armor) and just improves upon it more. While he's still not decked out in camo, he does have a more subtle shade of green that still is eye-catching but not eye-searing. Sci-Fi is armored for combat, sure, but I'm also guessing that suit provides some level of protection from radiation and such, too. If we ever get Battle Force 2000 in the Classified Series, I imagine will gel nicely with them. His chest armor is a separate piece and looks like it is designed to protect him from a number of different projectiles while not overly weighing him down.

* Here's a closer shot of the chest armor, the various pouches and textures on the jumpsuit, and the rather interesting wrist gauntlets. I'm sure it's nice to have all of this gear and protection when using experimental laser weapons.

* Unlike the vintage figure, Sci-Fi's helmet is now removable. There were actually four Sci-Fi figures in the vintage line, one in 1991 and two more in the Star Brigade subset. All three of those figure have removable helmets and those seem to be where the inspiration for this portrait comes from. It's a solid portrait with a slicked back, modern hairstyle.

* Sci-Fi's Laser Tag styled helmet is definitely sleeker than on the vintage figure with more texture and detail. You can also see Sci-Fi's entire face with the visor removed. Yes, the visor is removable.

* There are two included visors, both of which plug into the helmet quite securely. They really do stay in place quite well! The half visor is more like the vintage visor though it's transparent with two little nodes on the sides. I wonder if these are some sort of sensors or cameras that provide Sci-Fi with a HUD and possibly attach to the site on his laser rifle?

* The second visor covers Sci-Fi's full face, offering up an even more futuristic take on the character. I really like this look, especially the shape of the visor. It's not just flat but seems contoured for his face.

*  Sci-Fi has a pack of some sort on his left hip and two small black boxes in pouches on his thighs. What could these be? For years I wondered if they were some sort of "magazines" for his laser rifle, maybe projectiles enhances by the laser rifle or something, as the vintage weapon almost looks like it has a magazine of sorts. Maybe they're replacement parts or emergency batteries if the main backpack fails? The side pouch could be a small batter pack for the armor, gauntlets, and helmet, too.

* I really like how futuristic these boots look. They really seem like they'd provide some extreme protection. I'm not sure why Sci-Fi is wearing so much protection on his shins compared to everywhere else but I dig the look.

* He might be wearing a fairly heavy suit but Sci-Fi can move with the best of them. He's seriously well articulated and even has a balljointed torso underneath his chest armor that still grants him a great range of motion. He looks perfect in firing poses and is definitely a really fun figure to mess around and play with, especially when you start using the laser beam accessories. He just has a great range of motion all around and a fantastic feel. He's definitely one of my favorites to pick up and mess around with for sure.

* Sci-Fi's rifle is referred to as the XH86 LLOM Beam LASER Rifle and it looks like an upgrade of the previous weapons with a sleeker design. It has a few paint applications, it can be held well in two handed poses, and the scope on top is just fantastic. I imagine it is connected in with his visor so he doesn't have to physically look through the scope.

* The left side of the weapon even has a cool screen that can give data on the weapon. It's very tiny but it actually says "TARGET LOCKED" with a bunch of little numbers and characters.

* Sci-Fi's power source backpack is now black and silver instead of green which is a good choice. It really helps tone down the look of the figure. The hose plugs into the back and stays on the rifle so well, which is really nice. Those old hoses on the vintage line were a heck of a pain so I'm glad Hasbro has improved on them.

* If you read the vintage file card you'll find that Sci-Fi's laser rifle requires him to be still for a long time to utilize the laser. 40 years later, it's nice to see him operating something a bit more powerful. I mean, many Joes come with laser rifles in the Classified Series, right? I imagine Sci-Fi comes with something way more powerful and that operates more like the Ghostbusters' neutrona wands. This blue energy effect looks a bit more powerful and wild than your average laser and it stays in place well as both the rifle and the laser effect are pretty sturdy and solid accessories.

* There's a second attachment that looks like a massive ball of energy. Can Sci-Fi now hold utilize this rifle to fire a massive pulse of energy? How could and devastating could that be? The standard laser blast can plug into the energy orb.
While I have a lot of nostalgia for Sci-Fi, he's never been one of my absolute favorites. This guy really benefits from an improved design, though, and I could see him being a lean, mean, futuristic fighting machine who gets called on to cause serious damage and possibly even go after the Ghost Vipers and their D.I.R.E. beasts. Imagine Sci-Fi as the Joe team's answer to the Ghostbusters? I dig it. Hasbro's team really improved this guy and while I would have liked to have seen a sidearm of some sort, I can't knock how loaded with cool extras this guy is. Sci-Fi is an Epic figure and a standout from the last series of 2025 releases.

This is the first figure of Sci-Fi/ Seymour fine that I've reviewed. For more G.I. Joe: Classified Series reviews check out the following:
