Action Figure Review: Fabian Cortez from Marvel Legends Series: X-Men by Hasbro

I'm moving slowly through latest X-Men series of Marvel Legends figures and today I'm checking out a villain from the set: Fabian Cortez. Fabian Cortez has certainly had some more recent appearances in the comics as part of S.W.O.R.D. and during the Krakoa era of X-Men but most folks will remember him from when appeared in 1991's X-Men #1 or his appearance in the animated series. A mutant who can enhance the powers of other mutants (or hamper them),  Fabian Cortez (sometimes known as The Power) is a complicated character. He's also never had an action figure before, so he's another figure in this series that not just new to Legends but new to any Marvel line. This version of Fabian is based on his look as the founder of the Acolytes which he also sported in the animated series. Ready to check out Fabian Cortez? Then join me after the break...

The Facts:

Non-Scalper Price: $25 dollars

The Positives:

* Fabian Cortez definitely isn't one of the most recognizable X-Men characters out there, nor is he a character who pops up frequently in wish lists, so he's the real wild card in this series. His outfit definitely doesn't scream X-Men character to me, though it's not like there's any consistent look for X-Men heroes and villains. He's rocking primary colors and is wearing his blue sleeveless body suit with a big red V, slightly oversized boots and gloves, and gold shoulder pads that also hold his removable cape. Everything looks really bright and colorful and I do like the design of the gloves and boots. The chunkier gloves and boots just look good with the rest of the figure being quite sleek, differing things up a bit.

* I do like seeing how excellent of a job Hasbro does on headsculpts lately, especially those for characters who aren't A-listers and thus you don't have some sort of ideal way they should look already drilled into your mind. Fabian looks great. He's got reddish hair pulled into a ponytail, though the top looks intentionally short. He looks like he's ready for a fight or else just incredibly pissed off at something, so he's baring his gritted teeth.

* Check out that ponytail! With the top trimmed at the front, too, he's got a bit of a Billy Ray going on, don't you think? I like the headset he's wearing as well. It's not part of the sculpt; they're actually separate pieces imbedded into toe headsculpt. It looks really good and makes it seem very natural.

* Fabian Cortez's cape is kind of interesting. It's solid plastic but it's also removable. The cape slides up and under the shoulder pads and is held in place by them and with a peg that plugs into his back. It's an interesting feature and does give you the ability to display him either with or without the cape. The cape reminds me a bit of Magneto's, so you just know Fabian will be nuts about it.

* Fabian is pretty well articulated, especially if you decide to pop his cape off. He's on a newer styled body, so everything is pinless, and he's sporting pectoral hinges/ butterfly joints as well. Solid, durable, and he looks good. For a character that's not an A-Lister, he seems like an exciting figure due to the expressive face and those energy bolts. Is there anyone out there whose favorite Marvel character is Fabian Cortez? Do you think there's a kid anywhere who has bought this guy not knowing anything about him but who is making him the hero in their playtime?

* Fabian has swappable hands, which is pretty much par for the course for most Marvel Legends figures these days. There's a grasping or gesturing right hand, a standard gripping left hand, and a pair of fists. They swap easily and let you put some expression in the hands when posing the figure.

* These energy effects that fit over Fabian's fists aren't new or anything but I still love how they look. The orange plastic has some yellow mixed in (or I guess you'd say the plastic is a mix of yellow and orange) and, with his red gloves, it just looks very, very cool.

* Fabian comes packaged with the left leg for the Nemesis/ Holocaust build-a-figure and this guy is quite nifty. He's definitely going to help move this series as he's just an incredibly cool looking figure. Pretty large, too. I not have him built and I'm excited to review him in the near future.

Fabian Cortez definitely was not one of the figures on my list of characters I'm still eager to get in Marvel Legends, but he does make a nice wildcard for this series. He's not a nobody by any means and I'm actually a bit surprised that Toy Biz never made him back in the day. He's not the most exciting character but his color scheme, excellent headsculpt, and energy accessories do make him quite fun to pose and display. Plus he's got the Nemesis/ Holocaust BAF piece. I've pieced this series together from a few places including Amazon, GameStop, and Best Buy, and while I'm not sure if or when it will hit places like Target and Walmart, it's definitely a pretty exciting series. Even Fabian Cortex is a Great figure with some interesting features you might not notice at first.

This is the first figure of Fabian Cortez I've reviewed. For more Marvel Legends Series reviews check out the following:
