Today I'm looking at a figure from Jakks Pacific's 2.5 inch scaled World of Nintendo line: Chain Chomp! Chain Chomp is a baddie who first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3 back on the good ol' NES and who has become a Mario mainstay. While many of the 2.5 inch figures Jakks puts out are just smaller, non-articulated minifigures, characters like Chain Chomp are actually sized perfectly to work with the regular 4 inch line thus adding to Bowser's minions. I found this guy last week while at my local Wal-Mart and picked him up alongside two figures from Series 2-2. Ready for a look at this hungry, hungry monster who's always looking to take a bite out of the good guys? Then join me after the break...
The Facts:
Height: 2 inches
Articulation: Functioning 7 link chain
Accessories: None
Non-Scalper Price: $4 -$6 dollars
The Positives:
* The Chain Chomp has a pretty simply design but Jakks has done a nice job of capturing it. While something with articulated jaws might have been pretty cool, this sculpted grin is completely serviceable in the 2.5 inch minifigure line. He's the perfect size to fit in with the larger 5 inch figures and the elements like his teeth and eyes are actually sculpted rather than just painted on.
* I really like that Jakks gave Chain Chomp an actual chain. Well, it's a plastic chain (not metal) but it is actually a series of links. The chain itself is about 3 1/2 inches long and can be posed dragging behind the figure or used by another character in the larger line to hold Chain Chomp in place.
The Negatives:
* Like with Boo, the most frustrating thing about the chain chomp is that, due to his rounded nature, he cannot really stay on display. He's always going to be rolling around. I wish Jakks would have worked something out for him such as a small clear stand or something. They really do need to create something for all of these small, round creatures.
If you're looking for something to add to your World of Nintendo shelf, the Chain Chomp is fairly unique. It really would have been cool if Jakks had been able to add the block he's chained to into the set but, considering the price of these guys, it's no surprise. While some places charge well over $6 bucks a piece for these, shop around and you can find them for around $4. I think I paid a little less than $4 before tax at my local Wal-Mart. Chain Chomp is a good little minifigure and a nice addition to the main World of Nintendo series to help build up the bad guys.
This is the first Chain Chomp figure I've ever reviewed! I have reviewed plenty of other World of Nintendo toys, though, including:
