Wrapping up 2018: Magik from Marvel Legends Series: X-Men by Hasbro

    I'm currently working to wrap up all of my reviews for 2018 purchases and today I'm reviewing what I believe will be the last of my 2018 Marvel Legends purchases: Magik. I say this often, but I'm not a Marvel Legends collector in the same way that I collect other lines like MOTUC, Star Wars: The Black Series, or most 6 inch scaled DC lines. I'm a casual Marvel fan whose experience with the property is mostly due to the MCU and childhood nostalgia for Toy Biz's offerings in the early 1990s. That being said, man does Hasbro release some great toys! I know little about Magic, AKA Illyana Rasputin, other than that she is Colossus's younger sister, she can teleport, and that she's a magic user. While reading up on her for this review, I also learned, interestingly, she's going to be played by Anya Taylor-Joy of The Witch in this August's The New Mutants. How magical, right? Anyways, Magik is a Walgreens exclusive figure who I had been looking for for a couple of months but finally found in early December while doing some Christmas shopping. She's loaded with accessories and is just a really fun toy. Originally released in 2015 in the Book of Vishanti SDCC set, Magik has been one of the more difficult figures to obtain on the aftermarket. Let's check this new version of her out after the break...

 The Facts:

Height: 5 3/4ths inches

Articulation: Swivel/hinge ankles, boot swivels, double hinged knees, swivel thighs, ball jointed hips, ball jointed torso, swivel/ hinge shoulders, swivel/hinge elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, and a ball jointed head.

Accessories: Alternate flaming skull head, interchangeable right hand, 2 swords, sword energy effect, lightning effect, 2 arm energy effects, and a dragon.

Non-Scalper Price: $20 dollars

 The Positives:


* Magik is a very cool looking character. I mean, she's just a nice looking lady in a very 90's comic styled outfit with lots of leather and belts and such, but she's got it going on. She's also got a massive spiky arm. While I'm sure much of her body is reused from other figures (that's a staple of Marvel Legends and many other lines, after all), her torso and the massive spiky arm look pretty unique. I'm not sure I've ever seen those before other than on the 2015 figure which I've never owned.

 * Magik has a somewhat stern expression on her face, dark lipstick, and some sort of odd decorative elements coming out of her hair. What are those? They're cool but I don't know what to call them.

* Her spiked arm is pretty slick. It definitely reminds me of the kind of gear we saw on lots of the 90s "bad girl" characters like Witchblade and such. The detail is quite cool and, again, it looks rather unique here from other Legends figures.

 *  Hasbro continues to perfect the articulation on the Marvel Legends figures and Magik definitely has some of the best current articulation. Whether you want to have her sorceling things up or fighting with her swords, Magik is wonderfully articulated!

* Magik comes with a translucent red flaming skull from an older Ghostrider figure. It looks crazy on her but I dig it! Now, to be honest, I'm not sure if Hasbro included it here as an accessory or if it really is supposed to be an alternate portrait for Magik, but it's still a fun inclusion. I never say no to a translucent flaming red skull!

* Magik's right hand can swap out between the standard accessory holding right hand she comes wearing and a spell casting right hand. The swap is easy and it makes her all the more fun to play with.

 * Magik is loaded with accessories and two of her coolest are these translucent blue energy effects that wrap around her arms to represent her mystical powers!

* Magik also has this really cool lightning effect! Whether you have her keep it or let Emperor Palpatine swipe it, it's a great extra.

* Another cool extra that Magik comes with is a version of Kitty Pryde's Lockheed cast in reddish/orange plastic. I assume this is just meant to be a random creature accompanying Magik, so it's cool that she has a nice little companion to keep her company.

 * Magic comes wielding two swords. First up is this massive sword! The blade is translucent yellow and the hilt has some odd little accents that match the details in Magik's hair. Cool, huh?

* Magik's second sword features a translucent blue blade with a removable blue energy effect.

 The Negatives:


* I don't think this is intentional. It just looks like the back of Magik's shorts had some odd paint scraping going on.

   Even if you consider this just as an accessory pack, Magik would be a pretty cool offering with all of her energy effects and swords. Considering she's an exclusive version of a really cool harder to find figure, she's quite a find. Hasbro really outdid themselves in the accessories department here. Walgreens has absolutely become an A plus destination for Hasbro exclusive figures and Magik is another solid addition for 2018's roster. She's still showing up at some locations so, if you're interested, start your hunt now! She's an Epic figure and well worth tracking down.
