Action Figure Review: Modulok from He-Man and the Masters of the Universe by Super7

   The latest (and last) series of Super7's Filmation inspired He-Man and the Masters of the Universe figures started shipped out in mid-January and I'm slowly making my way through them all. Today I'm checking out Modulok, the evil Eternian scientist who finally left Skeletor's abuse to join the Evil Horde. The vintage Modulok is most famous for being completely modular and sold in a box containing 22 body parts that you could use to build whatever creature you wanted (the Masters of the Universe Classics Modulok followed suit). The Filmation Modulok was definitely a bit different as he didn't have swappable body parts, although he could change his arms into different tools and he apparently could swap his head out if he needed to. Let's check out Modulok after the break and see how he turned out...

 The Facts:

Height: 7 5/8ths inches (with both heads)

Articulation: Swivel hinge ankles (x3), hinged knees, double swivel/ hinge rear knee, thigh swivels, swivel/hinge hips, hinged rear hip, swivel waist, mid-torso hinge, swivel/hinge shoulders, bicep swivels, hinged elbows, swivel wrists, balljointed neck, and balljointed heads (x2).

Accessories: Two interchangeable heads, neck piece, four interchangeable hands, laser cannon hand, and mallet hand.

Non-Scalper Price: $35 dollars

 Comparison:

*On the left is the Filmation inspired Modulok while the MOTUC Modulok is on the right. While there are some similarities in color and design, there are no reused parts here. The Filmation Modulok is a completely unique figure from his MOTUC counterpart.

 The Positives:



* Modulok is a really cool looking figure that definitely captures the look of the Filmation character nicely. The colors are bright and bold, his outfit looks great, and he seems rather menacing with his spiked wrist bands, clawed hands, and double heads. Fierce!

* This is my favorite of the two headsculpts as it just looks more fearsome. It's also the headsculpt that Modulok actually uses in the cartoon. Unlike the vintage toy, Modulok was only ever portrayed with one head in the Filmation cartoons. The eyes are quite fearsome and the teeth look really sharp. He's seriously way more creepy than I recall, which is a great thing indeed.

* The second head was part of the vintage toy but only ever made a cameo appearance in the cartoon series. I love the big, bold yellow eyes and the weird antennae like loops on the top.

 * If you want a two-head Modulok, Super7 has you covered. The figure comes packed with an extra neck piece that extends the neck and has two balljoints for the heads to sit on. It's way taller than I expected but it does help Modulok really stand out among the Filmation Horde.

* Modulok is quite well articulated. Both this series and the recent MOTUC series of figures have been some of the best Super7 have put out, with better plastic quality. Modulok feels great and is really fun to pose, especially when you work alternate heads and his alternate hand weapons into the mix.

 * Modulok also has three legs, just like in the cartoon. This gives him a more unique silhouette for sure and also makes him quite fun to stand. He can be posed lower to the ground or you can make him taller with all his legs standing straight up.

* Modulok comes with two sets of hands: One is slightly open, like he's trying to grab something, while the other is more relaxed. They're not incredibly different or anything but they do give you a little more variety in posing him and they swap easily.

 * Modulok has two weaponized hands, the first of which is an electrode cannon. It's quite large and fairly simple looking but it also seems right in line with the style of many Filmation weapons.

* Next up is a giant mallet. Imagine Modulok running around popping people in the head with this giant mallet. Dang! That could be brutal, couldn't it? Or, imagine Modulok as a Gallagher styled comedian!

 The Negatives:

* It might be hard to see here but the balljoint in the front already is showing some stress marks. Be careful snapping Modulok's heads onto this piece. It's a bit softer than your normal joints and can bend easily.

 

* What exactly is on the end of Modulok's mallet? Who did he smash with this? Actually, it looks like there's a lot of excess glue on the tip of the mallet for some reason.

   Modulok is a Great figure and presents a great opportunity to add another member of the Horde to the Filmation styled collection. I really hope Mattel picks this line back up someday as it would be great to have Leech, Catra, and Scorpia in the Filmation style. As it stands, Modulok really offers a lot of extras and a lot of interactive elements, which I like. He's fun to play with and you have a number of display options for him. This far he's the winner of this series for me, though I've still got four more figures to check out! Those reviews are coming soon, so stay tuned!
