March Magic, a monthlong celebration of Orko!
Today I'm going to be checking out one of the newest Orko toys out there: Orko from Mattel's Masters of the Universe Origins. Orko was originally created by Filmation for the animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and his popularity with kids resulted in him making his way into most other MOTU endeavors as well. Orko was released in the vintage MOTU toyline in 1984 as part of the third series of releases so he definitely has a fairly long history in the brand. Last year Mattel released Orko into Masters of the Universe Origins as part of the second series of figures which were all exclusive to Walmart until 2021. Now the toys are showing up in more places although at this point, series 2 is still kind of tough to find. I just got Orko a week or so ago and I knew he'd be a great part of the monthlong festivities. ready to check out the Masters of the Universe Origins Orko? Then join me after the break...

Comparison:
* Here's a quick shot of the MOTU Origins Orko (on the left) with the vintage Orko (on the right). They're clearly the same character but the vintage figure has much darker colors along with a built in action feature (he used a ripcord that caused him to spin around) while the Origins figure is much brighter and looks more like the Filmation character model.
The Positives:
* I really like the look of the Origins Orko. For fans of the character's Filmation appearance this version of Orko is pretty spot on and could work in a variety of lines including Masters of the Universe Classics. The sculpt is simple but fitting for Orko and the paint colors are nice and bright. It's not what I would have expected when Origins started but I really do like the look of the figure).
* The headsculpt perfectly captures the look of the Filmation Orko. I love the eyes, the ears, and the hat! The balljoint works really nicely, too, and you can get some very expressive looks out of Orko.
* While Orko is built completely differently from the other MOTU Origins figures (you know, no legs or anything) he does have great movement in his arms and head. What's here is very fun to pose!
* Orko doesn't come with any traditional accessories but he does have a very cool stand. The bottom is glittery purple and looks like a puff of magic while the translucent bar allows Orko to hover. It's articulated as well, so you can use it to further pose him.
* The series 2 figures all come with the same minicomic: "Double Trouble." It's a cool little comic that features the series 2 characters and it adds a nice little something to the overall package. I like the cover! I wonder if we'll ever get any Orko variants or other Trollans in this line?
The Negatives:
* Considering that he has such a simple paintjob it's kind of disappointing that Orko has some paint slop on the bottom of his "O" and around his eyes. The cleaner these figures are, the better they look.
Orko doesn't have the cool swappable limbs of the other figures in the line now does he have an actual accessory of his own (I really wish he had come with a wand) but he's still quite nice. I definitely think fans of multiple MOTU lines, especially MOTUC, might find a way to work him into their lines as he's a great, Filmation accurate sculpt. He's a Good and a 1/2 figure of a lovable character (though I know there's a lot of fans who love hard, gritty MOTU who want nothing to do with Orko) who adds something special to the Origins line so far.
