Action Figure Review: Leech from Masterverse: Princess of Power by Mattel

I've definitely not been putting out as many reviews over the past month as you're probably accustomed to, so some of you have probably wondered if I'm OK. I am! I've been working on a special project that involves another swamp creature. October is less than 3 months away, you know...

Masterverse is putting out the Evil Horde very slowly in the Princess of Power subset but Leech gives us at least one one new member for this year. While he's not an exact match for the Filmation version of Leech from She-Ra: Princess of Power, this take on Leech does seem to be inspired by the design of the Filmation version mixed with the vintage toy. I'm surprised we got this take on Leech rather than the Masters of the Universe: Revolution but only because it's the most recent show the character appeared in. Personally, I really hope Mattel gets to some of the Great Rebellion in the line. Anyways, I'm excited to have Leech as he's not a character we've seen in Masterverse yet. Ready to check him out? Then join me after the break...

The Facts:

Height: 6 7/8ths inches

Articulation: Swivel/hinge ankles, boot swivels, double hinged knees, thigh swivels, balljointed hips, swivel waist, balljointed mid-torso, swivel/hinge shoulders, bicep swivels, double hinged elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, hinged neck, and a ball jointed head.

Accessories: Whip, 2 shoulder pads, two bracers, and crossbow.

Non-Scalper Price: $22-$23 dollars

The Positives:

* There are surely some shared parts in the arms and legs but overall Leech has a lot of uniquely sculpted bits like his hands, torso, and feet. This guy is pretty crazy looking and has an appearance that's just slightly animated looking, but not enough that he won't it in with the rest of your Masterverse stuff like the New Eternia subset. He doesn't have swappable hands or anything but you can pop off his hands to remove his shoulder pads and wrist bracers if you want to. There's not a ton of paint here; instead, most parts are simply molded in the respective colors. He's really quite eye-catching with multiple shades of green for his body and black, gold, and green for his armor.

* The headsculpt is definitely the best part of this figure. It's probably the best Leech headsculpt we've had on a figure to date, particularly with the amount of character and expression shown in his bulging red eyes. Leech is a creepy character and it's nice to have him fully sculpted and detailed with a lot of personality rather than just with a funky mouth.

* Speaking of Leech's mouth, Mattel went with a mouth full of sharp teeth and a creepy tongue rather than give him a flat mouth like the vintage figure. This guy is really pretty scary and that mouth is terrifying. Look at all those teeth!

* The armored plates on Leech's back look great (they're part of his armor, not his body) and he's also sporting removable shoulder pads emblazoned with the Horde logo. Hordak's all about the branding but that shouldn't be much of a surprise to most MOTU fans. When you get stomped by the Horde, Hordak wants you to know it was the Horde who did the stomping!

* While they're unpainted, Leech's hands with creepy suction pads and lots of little teeth are pretty wild. I love how he can slap these against someone
s head to sap their energy, just like in the Filmation cartoon.

* He's also sporting those creepy suction cup feet, also with lots of little teeth. He can stand flat on them, but having these hidden underneath is a cool extra detail, though he can't use a peg stand.

* Leech's articulation is pretty good. At first his shoulders were pretty stuff but after a bit of posing they're now moving just fine. Mattel is releasing sturdy, well articulated figures here. A kid could play with these just fine and collectors should be happy with most of the articulation. No, they're not sporting import levels of articulation, but they're quite fun to play with. Leech's crazy suction hands make most poses look pretty cool and extra menacing.

* Leech's crossbow comes in red and has the cool energy effect that the other Masterverse crossbows have as well. I like these way more than the vintage and MOTU Origins crossbows, though not as much as the MOTU Classics crossbows.

* I really like this whip thing that Leech has, too. The little Hordak logo clips around Leech's forearm and the whip is attached to it, allowing him to capture his prey with ease.

I really like Leech, probably far more than any other Leech figures we've gotten before. A nice design that captures the best bits of the cartoon design and the vintage toy design, two accessories that work well with the figure (and which he can hold), no gimmicks impeding his functionality, and a great headsculpt. He's a Great and a 1/2 figure and another fun Masterverse addition. Some extra hands would have been cool (maybe with his hand suction cups folded up more like he's draining someone's brain energy) but what he has is nothing to scoff at.

    1. When I was adding him to the archive I was pleasantly surprised by how many Horde members have been released. More than I remembered in Masterverse. Who do we think is next? It's gotta be Mantenna, right? Am I missing someone who has already been announced?

    2. I'm hoping the next PoP figure be a hero cos there's only TWO against FIVE Horde members but yeah I'd say Mantenna would be the next Horde character.

    3. For the POP, absolutely, we need a hero. Glimmer or Bow seem like the most likely candidates. I'd be down for Perfuma, but she feels lie she might have to be a Mattel Creations exclusive. I could see Mattel being a bit hesitant on her at mainstream retail still. She's still available in MOTUC at not too much above retail and I seem to remember her being on sale many times after she was released.
