Happy Franksgiving! Frankenstein #1630 from POP! Movies: Universal Monsters by Funko

It's time for another Franksgiving review! Today I'm checking out another figure from Funko's newest series of Universal Monsters POP! vinyls featuring a unique aesthetic that reminds me of the look of comic book art from the 1970s. They're bright, bold, and feature some unique shading and colors that set them apart from the usual darker, often greyscale, palette of the Universal Monsters. I reviewed the Bride of Frankenstein from this set on Halloween for 2024's 31 Days of Toy Terror Takes the Universe so now it's nice to have Frankenstein/ the Frankenstein Monster to go along with her. Ready to check out this eye-catching tribute to Boris Karloff's classic take on the character? Then join me after the break...

The Facts:

Height: 4 inches

Articulation: Swivel head.

Accessories: None

Non-Scalper Price: $12-$13 dollars

The Packaging:

* I rarely leave my Funko POP! vinyls boxed, and I'm not doing it with these guys either, but I love the orange and black packaging this set comes in. It looks great and just screams Halloween. The set also includes the Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Wolfman. The Wolf Man is an exclusive through Funko.

The Positives:

* Frankenstein's Monster (for simplicity, I'm just going to call him Frankenstein) is standing upright with is arms out in front of him, a pretty decent Frankenstein pose that gives you something to ponder: What's he getting ready to do? Reach out and do something gentle or throttle someone? His stapled together head rotates, like most POP! vinyls, so you can give him a bit of a pose on your shelf.

* The colors on this guy are really quite groovy! Does he resemble a classic Ben Cooper costume design or is he styled after a 1970s comic book? Whatever the source of the inspiration may be, I love the look. The color takes a rather basic Frankenstein look (the classic ill-fitting suit and big boots) and really breathes some new life lightning into it.

* Even with this being a stylized, simple POP! vinyl, there are definitely some nice details that truly make this guy instantly recognizable. The hair cut, the heavy brow, and the bags under the eyes. The brow uses a few different colors and a wonderful neon green to really bring the Frankenstein Monster to life.

* His bolts are present on both sides and have little stapled together lacerations next to them, too.

* I like the highlights on Frankenstein's suit and boots. They are colorful and really do look like the details you would see on classic comic book art, giving a grey and black design some hits of pastel. It's really a cool aesthetic.

This subset of brightly colored Universal Monsters is really a fun collection and Frankenstein's Monster is a Great vinyl figure. Affordable, well made, and just a lot of fun with an eye-catching appearance. I love him! I'm hopeful that Funko will do a few more of the Universal Monsters in this style, particularly the Invisible Man, the Phantom of the Opera, and Mummy. They look great as a collection and visually "pop" more than most POPs out there.

    1. Their are some nice designs. I also have the Frankenstein's Monster POP! with the flower and the black light color design. It's from a few year's back and may have been a Walgreens exclusive if I'm remembering correctly.
