Action Figure Review: Scare Mare & Scare Glow #999 from POP! Rides: Funko Fusion by Funko

I'm pretty excited about today's review as it fills a neat space in my collection. I really was impressed with the recent set of Scare Mare and Scare Glow that Mondo put up for preorder this past summer. Impressed looking at it online, that is. The set of a new Scare Glow and the all new Scare Mare in Mondo's 1/6th scale Masters of the Universe line was available as a pair for $775 dollars. Yikes! If I had really wanted it, I absolutely could have afforded it, but I've definitely reached a point where the prices of some action figures and collectibles really just cause me to balk. I'm also at a point where space is at a premium in my collection. The wingspan of Mondo's Scare Mare is 54" and I just couldn't even think where I'd put something like that. I've been scaling back my collection this year, selling off older pieces I didn't have on display or that I'd lost interest in. I love Scare Glow, but already having two Mondo Scare Glows, not having space for the Scare Mare, and reluctant to pay $775 for a preorder, I passed. That's why I was pretty excited that Funko added Scare Glow and Scare Mare to their Funko Fusion line based on the recently released videogame. I didn't even know what Funko Fusion was at first but it's since come out and doesn't seem to be lighting the world on fire. At least having a POP! Rides of care Mare & Scare Glow allows me to have a representation of the character in my collection at a fraction of the price of Mondo's. ready to check out Scare Mare & Scare Glow? Then join me after the break...

The Facts:

Height: 6 1/4ths inches

The Positives:

* Scare Glow and Scare Mare are not separate figures. They're connected, like many/ most POP! Rides, and they make for a pretty substantial figure. This guy is heavy with a footprint much larger than your average Funko POP! offering. It's heavy, too, so if you needed to chuck this at someone, it would do some damage. Why might you feel the need? Who knows. You'd probably leave them with a crack on their noggin, though.
* Speaking of cracks on the skull, let's talk about Scare Glow! I love this guy and it feels like it's been awhile since I last picked up anything with him on it. This is a cool POP! sculpt of Karak Nul and while it doesn't offer any of the cool new features of Mondo's figure (a Karak Nul human portrait and a portrait with flames erupting from the skull), it's a nice classic Scare Glow. It's not too different from the 2017 Scare Glow POP!, but it's not the same, either.

* He's not billed as a glow in the dark figure but Scare Glow definitely looks like he has bones that are a shade of white so that he could glow if he wanted to. He doesn't want to, though. His bones and the empty spaces between them are painted on, just like the vintage toy. He doesn't get any special armor here. Just his classic purple cape and mantle.

* For when Scare Glow is not just content with pulling your hair up (but not out), he has his classic halberd, also known as the scythe of doom. It's neon green, like the vintage toy, and it a pretty nice approximation of the classic accessory.

* Scare Glow's cape is blowing out behind him as if he's riding or flying Scare Mare into battle!

* Let's take a look at Scare Mare now, a brand new creation from Mondo's Hector Arce, Bob Fulkerson, and Florian Bertmer. I'd really be curious how Funko turned turned this design into a POP! vinyl and got it out before Mondo's own figure. From what I've heard Scare Glow and Scare Mare don't appear in the Funko Fusion video game. Scare Mare's head reminds me of a wild My Little Pony design with red eyes, bony features, and an armored helmet similar to Stridor and Night Stalker's, but with more chains and rivets.

* The body is really cool on Scare Mare. I mean, Mondo's Scare Mare looks like he's going to end up being a masterpiece of Masters of the Universe collectibles, but this POP! still looks pretty impressive and gets the point across. He doesn't actually glow (me and Umbreon13 held him under a bunch of lights and then took him into the pantry just to be sure) but the color of the plastic that changes from bone white to a ghastly green does look like it could glow.

* The wings are undersized, sure, but that feels like it fits the Funko POP! aesthetic. They're very bony looking with holes in them where I assume the original wings have rotted and decayed away.

* The saddle looks a bit like Battle Cat and Panthor's saddles, but there is a shield like cover with a skull on it. The saddle is sitting on top of horse blanket or robe of some sort and has little bones hanging down from the saddle.

* Not only does Scare Mare have some cool armor on his front legs but he also has spooky flaming hooves that are glowing a ghastly green. Creepy!

* Like the cats in the Retro Toy Series POP! Rides line, Scare Glow's mount has a buckle and strap across the stomach that is reminiscent of the buckles on the vintage MOTU cats and the Princess of Power horses.

* To tie in the Funko Fusion POP! vinyls with the game, the figure comes with a redemption card with a hidden code for unlocking "Exclusive In-Game Content." From what I've learned, Scare Mare & Scare Glow are not unlocked with this code. In fact, they're apparently not even in this game. The codes are random and can get you either a Slime Pit He-Man skin, a damaged M3gan, a dilophosaurus possessed by the game's villain Eddy Funko, the Big Boy, or a Mecha Freddy Funko. It's a cool little extra, though not one I'll use or anything.

When it comes to Funko POP! vinyls, this take on Scare Mare & Scare Glow is pretty incredible. Odds are I'm not going to be picking up the Mondo Scare Mare and Scare Glow but this is a cool way to at least have the character and mount on my collection (unless we get one in Masterverse or Origins). It really is a very impressive POP! vinyl and just is covered with cool detail. While I'm not planning to use the game code (I got battle damaged M3Gan and listed it for sale), it is weird it's not for the figure you purchased. Still, it is a way to connect the toys and the game. The POP! is Epic, though, and one of the neatest ones I've seen in quite some time.

This is the first toy of Scare Mare I've reviewed.

  1. I've never much liked Pops but this one's pretty neat.

Wouldn't mind a Masterverse Scare Mare.
