Classic Hokey Halloween Horror: Jolly Rancher Caramel Apple Crunch 'N Chew Candy

This review originally appeared on The Epic Review back in 2014!

I'm not sure if these are new or not this year, but this is certainly the first time I recall seeing Caramel Apple flavored Jolly Ranchers. More specifically, these are Caramel Apple flavored Jolly Rancher Crunch 'n Chew candy. Yeah, they're an odd mix between the traditional hard, square little Jolly Ranchers and the soft, chewy little Jolly Ranchers bites that come in a bag. Honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of Jolly Ranchers but when I saw the purple and green fall themed bag I knew I was going to have to buy these. While purple and green are most definitely the George and Ringo of Halloween colors, I have to say I really like them. These aren't full on Halloween candy; they're more of a simple fall specialty and thus function as gateway drug to the harder stuff. Anyways, I'm going to write more on these and show you some pictures of these candies interacting with various toys after the break. Why wouldn't you read this?

Inside the package I found nine individually wrapped Caramel Apple Jolly Ranchers candies. We get more green and purple (still loving that) but a lot more brown. Brown is kind of like the Pete Best of Halloween colors. Anyways, being individually wrapped means I feel less compelled to eat these all in one sitting.
When you remove the wrapper, you'll find that these Jolly Ranchers are kind of impressive looking. They're not square like your garden variety Jolly Rancher, however. They remind me more, because of their shape and texture, of root beer barrels. I like the way the green and caramel brown mix together. The outer shell is the crunchy part of the Crunch 'n Chew name, although it's a little too hard to crunch with your teeth right off the bat. You really need to suck on these for a minute or so, although I think Suck 'n Chew probably wouldn't be the best name for a candy.

I probably haven't had a real Jolly Rancher in years although I have had a Jolly Rancher soda a few years back and I ate a bag of the soft watermelon Jolly Rancher chews a few weeks ago. Whenever I try a Jolly Rancher flavored product, the first word that always comes to my mind to describe the flavor is "chemical." Jolly Ranchers usually have such a strong flavor that I can't help but be reminded that I'm eating something with no actual fruit flavor at all. I feel like I'm eating something that tastes the way a fruit scented permanent marker smells. I'm getting that with these, though. This is a legitimate artificial caramel apple taste. They taste a lot like the caramel apple Jones Soda from last Halloween (which is the one flavor I didn't review last year). I guess the middle part is supposed to be chewy, but I didn't really notice it tasting much different than everything else. I also didn't have the patience to fully enjoy this candy as intended by letting the outer shell dissolve in my mouth.

While I feel like these are going to end up as simply a footnote to the offerings of Halloween 2014 they're not bad. I always feel like Jolly Ranchers, while a name brand candy, are kind of a cop out candy. You know when you're in a new area and one person wants to try a unique local restaurant while the other wants to go somewhere inexpensive and familiar, so you end up at McDonald's? Jolly Ranchers are like that, but in candy. These are a bit above that, though. Like the McRib.

And here is a picture of a scary tree eating Caramel Apple Jolly Ranchers!
