Action Figure Review: Kill-Switch from Action Force by Valaverse

Valaverse continues to put out some amazing stuff and it looks like they have many more cool releases on the way, including some character specific accessory packs and a vehicle. Today I'm looking Kill-Switch, one of the series 3 releases from earlier this year. Series 3 introduced female figures into the Action Force line, so now we can expect a better mix of men and women in future waves. Kill-Switch is a new character created for Valaverse's Action Force. Her real name is Layla Richardson, she's from Bay City, Michigan, and she's an EOD and BUD/S instructor. Well, she was a BUD/S Instructor; now she's member of Action Force. Ready for a look at Kill-Switch? Then join me after the break...

The Facts:

Height: 6 1/8ths inches

Articulation: Swivel/ hinge ankles, boot swivels, double hinged knees, swivel thighs, ball jointed drop down hips, ball jointed waist, balljointed mid-torso, swivel/hinge shoulders, bicep swivels, double hinged elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, hinged neck, and a ball jointed head.

Accessories: Vest, 2 portraits, 8 swappable hands, 2 rifles, 3 magazines, pistol, knife, and display stand.

Non-Scalper Price: $32 dollars

The Positives:

* Most of the series three women share a standard body, so Kill-Switch is sporting a tactical sweater, similar to many of the other Action Force members in the line, though hers nicely stands out being red and black. It's a nice piece with sculpted folds and creases to make it look like an actual garment and not just something painted on. Her gray pants are also quite sharp with built in kneepads and protective padding on her inner thighs. Everything looks excellent here.

* Kill-Switch also comes packaged wearing the same armored vest that Eclipse and the Steel Brigade trooper wear, though hers is more of a greenish color that reminds me of Boba Fett's armor. It's sporting lots of scuffs and scrapes, black straps to keep it in place, and the Action Force logo right across the top. The vest is easy to take on and off, so you can switch up Kill-Switch's look quite easily.

* Kill-Switch is the second of the female soldiers I've opened from Action Force and her portrait is also really impressive. She might be my favorite so far. She's really pretty with fantastic paint work on her eyes and lips and a cool, funky little nose ring, which just adds a nice bit of character.

* Flip her around and you can see the detailed sculpting on her braided hair and the back of her vest. The back of the Action Force vest has an exoskeleton-like spine detail that just looks really neat.

* Kill-Switch's alternate portrait features her wearing a balaclava. It's pretty snug, so you can see most of her facial features underneath the mask. I'm not sure that her hair would fit under there, but maybe? It does give you nice option for swapping up her look.

* The Action Force line has an excellent articulation model that wonderfully blends functional articulation with the sculpt. It reminds me a lot of the G.I. Joe: Classified Series. Kill-Switch's articulation isn't much different than that of her male counterparts except that she doesn't have the butterfly hinges. Since her arms and armor are thinner, though, it's not as necessary as she can still take two handed firing poses just fine.

* Eclipse comes with eight gloved hands that you can swap out to change her up a bit. The pegs are really thick and sturdy though I had to use heat when I swapped them the first time or two. There's a pair of pistol grips, a pair of cradling hands for holding the barrel of a rifle, a pair of standard grips, and a pair of fists.

* Kill-Switch comes toting two rifles, the first of which looks like a VSK-94, a Russian designated marksman rifle. If I'm off on identifying this, let me know. I'm not sure why she's toting a Russian weapon, but I assume that Action Force lets their operators equip themselves however they want. This is a slick looking rifle that first appeared in the Weapons Pack Delta and here has a sleek black and grey paintjob. It's also sporting a very serious looking optical sight.

*  Kill-Switch's second rifle is an HK G36. We've seen these before quite a few times in the line, but nit with this nifty gray and black paintjob.

* The G36 also has a removable magazine. The figures come with three, so you've even got spares.

* The extra magazines fit inside the pouches on her vest. They're quite snug, so don't push them all the way in unless you have some tiny needle nose pliers to pull them out with.

* We've seen this knife quite a few times before (it came with the original Steel Brigade trooper) and it seems to be one of the default options for the Action Force team. It's still a very impressive sculpt, though, and here it's molded mostly in black with a dark grey paint application for the edge of the blade.

* Kill-Switch also has the standard belt around her waist that is a separate piece, but you'll have to disassemble the figure if you want it off. I don't intend to remove hers, though, especially since the belt has a sheathe for the knife. It slides in perfectly.

*  The SilencerCo Maxim 9, a pistol with a built in suppressor/ silencer, is another reused accessory that seems to have become the default sidearm for the Action Force team. The grip looks like a pretty standard modern pistol but the front is more futuristic and boxy. Kill-Switch's Maxim 9 is black and grey, matching her other firearms.

* The holster is another piece Kill-Switch shares with the other Action Force women so far. It is a separate piece but it doesn't seem easy to take off, so I'm leaving it on. The pistol fits in securely and it keeps it right within her reach. There are also some additional magazines sculpted onto the plating that the holster is attached too. It's a really well done piece of the figure.

* I'm a huge fan of all action figures coming with display bases and Action Force's bases might be the best out there. The metal look of the display stand is fantastic and there are four pegs on the base, making it extra versatile. See that little slit at the back? If you want to cut out the file card from Kill-Switch's package you can even display it behind her, resting in that slit.

The Negatives:

* Like with Eclipse and some other figures in the line released last year, I did have to use a bit of heat to swap the hands the first few times and to pop the alternate head on. All of the pegs are durable, so I didn't have any fear of breakage, but it did take me using a hairdryer a few times to get the hands and head to swap out easily and consistently.

Kill-Switch is another very cool figure in the Action Force line and I'm still trying to figure out if I prefer her or Eclipse. Why not both, right? She's a fantastic looking figure with excellent accessories, great articulation, and two portraits. There's a lot of versatility here. Honestly, I think Kill-Switch has my favorite color scheme and portrait out of the series three figures. Her red and grey/green outfit is just so nice and really stands out in the line. She's getting an Epic as well. Yeah, there's a lot of sharing/ reuse here, but Valaverse does a great job of creating unique characters and loading them with gear and display options, especially considering that they're a relatively new company and smaller than the big dogs out there. I'm really excited to see how this line shapes up in 2023 as Valaverse showed off some impressive stuff at their Valacon event a couple weeks ago, including an upcoming accessory pack to make Kill-Switch even cooler.
