Trick or Treat Through 31 Days of Toy Terror: Creature from the Black Lagoon (Black & White) from Tubbz Mystery Egg: Universal Monsters by Numskull Designs

I received a pretty cool little surprise for my birthday: A Tubbz Mystery Egg. I've had a Jeep for a couple years now and while my dashboard isn't covered with ducks, I do have a few in a little tray and in a little net bag inside. I received this guy as a little extra gift probably more for my love of the classic Universal Monsters than because it's a duck. These guys are blind bagged, which I'm not a huge fan of, so I'm not sure I'll go out and attempt to snag any more, though you know I really want a Wolf Man. I like the Creature from the Black Lagoon, though, and this black and white variant is pretty cool. Not only do the minifigures look like little rubber duck versions of the Universal Monsters breaking out of an egg but the figure comes inside of a little plastic egg, keeping you from being able to tell what's inside of the wrapper. These can vary in price depending on where you get them as I've seen them listed for between $5 and $9 dollars. Which characters are available? It looks like there is a regular and black & white creature, a regular and black & white Bride, a Wolf Man, Mummy, Frankenstein Monster, Dracula, and Invisible Man, and a rare bronze Dracula, silver Frankenstein, and gold Mummy. Ready for a look at a very classic looking Creature from the Black Lagoon? Then dive in and join me after the break...

The Facts:

Height: 1 5/8ths inches

Articulation: None

Accessories: 2 piece eggshell container

Non-Scalper Price: $5 -$9 dollars

The Positives:

* I really do like that the Tubbz Mystery Eggs aren't just tiny versions of the previously released ducks; they're little hatchlings, tearing their way out of an egg. There are multiple different colors here that really make the black & white effect look quite interesting rather than being simply two toned with gray and black. The bottom of the egg is flat, so you can easily display this guy on a shelf.

* The sculpt is excellent on the Creature. He really looks impressive. I mean, yeah, he's a cutesy duck version of the Creature, but all the details you'd expect are here. They are molded in a harder vinyl that really presents a crisp look, especially on textures like the Creature's fins and the fins on the sides of his head and arms.

* The back of the Creature shows more egg than the front, sure, but the edge of the egg looks nice and there's still plenty of detail.

* Here's a shot of the egg that the figure comes in, which is inside of a blind bag. It's similar to an Easter egg or something from a Jurassic Park toy, but it is a little reusable extra. There's also a little guide showing off the figures included in the series, which is a nice inclusion.

The Negatives:

* Unfortunately, my Creature's eye is misprinted. You can see that his left eye is off, making it look like he's winking. I at first though maybe Numskull Designs was going for some sort of expression but, nope, look close and you can see how things were misaligned here. Bummer.

These guys are fun, though I hate that they're blind bagged. Everyone one of them is a winner character-wise, but you're likely going to end up with duplicates if you try your hand at grabbing a few of them. The Creature looks really nice and I like the concept; they're just a bit small for the price, especially if you're paying on the higher end of the retail price. Having a QC paint error on the eyes is also a drag, especially considering everything else looks so impressive. It's still a Good little mini, but that misprinted eye definitely dampens my enthusiasm a bit.
