The Incredible Shrinking 31 Days of Toy Terror: Dr. Beargrave from Deddy Bears Minifigures by Innov8 Creative Academy

Halloween is almost here and we've got another visit from the Deddy Bears! I've reviewed a couple of these fun little guys and this time I'm looking at another Series 2 mini: Dr. Beargrave! He's a great companion for the Frankenbear figure, wouldn't you agree? While he's not based on any particular pre-existing character, Dr. Beargrave is obviously inspired by Victor Frankenstein from Mary Shelley's classic novel Frankenstein and all of the mad scientists who have come after him. These are some nifty little terrifying bears and while I like collecting them, I do have to keep them away from Zoey as she'd probably try to eat them. You know how much she loves bears! These aren't blind boxed, so you know what figure you're buying. I've been finding these at Five Below and seem to restock them quite frequently. I haven't noticed any figures being particularly hard to find but Dr. Beargrave is listed as 1:24, so presumably he's rarer than most others. Let's step inside Dr. Beargrave's laboratory and see what's cooking...

The Facts:

Height: 3 inches

Articulation: None

Accessories: None

Non-Scalper Price: $5 dollars

The Positives:

* Dr. Beargrave has a nice mix of colors with green, pink, and a touch of blue for his goggles. He captures quite a few details of the classic mad scientist trope while also having a cool and cocky little pose. Arms crossed, little gloves that allow his claws to still stand out; he's both adorable and prolific in the ways of mad science.

* There's some nice protective gear here for Dr. Beargrave. Besides the protective gloves I've already mentioned he's also sporting some protective boots over his paws and a white lab suit to protect his fur from dangerous spills. Goggles are all so important for eye protection so he has a pair of those, too. Lab safety is vital for everyone! Even though those who tamper with the forces of nature neither men nor bear are meant to understand.

* His expression cracks me up. Why's his skin green? Maybe the real answer is that Dr. Beargrave's skin being green is why Frankenbear has green skin: He wanted his creation to look like him! Oh, and his brain is exposed. While, really? Yup. He also apparently has brains in his ears. I'm no expert in bear anatomy but this seems a bit unusual from what I remember from 2nd grade science class.

The Negatives:

* My only complaint with these little guys is that there are often a lot of little paint defects. The goggles seem to have lots of little rubbed spots where the pink shows through, the eyes aren't fully painted, and the rubbery material tends to come out of the box with little scuffs. I know these are a value product but they're not tiny enough not complex enough sculpts that paint errors like this are understandable. With simple color patterns and large surface areas, I'd think the simple paint jobs would be very clean.

These aren't the best minifigures out there (they're actually probably too tall to really be considered minifigures, but that's still what i think of them as) but they do have a fun charm. They're cute, creepy, and the price is just right on them. Dr. Beargrave is a nice addition to pair with Frankenbear and maybe some of the other Deddy Bears who could be science experiments gone wrong. I really like the look of the figure and the personality. He just has a cool vibe to him. If Innov8 Creative Academy could tighten up the paint, these would be tough to beat. He's a Good and a 1/2 little minifigure and a fun addition to your horror shelf. Just don't let Zoey near him! She'll definitely try to snatch him.

This is the first figure of Dr. Beargrave I've reviewed. For more Deddy Bears Minifigures check out the following:
