Action Figure Review: Cosmo from Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 by McDonald's

Back in February my wife and I went to the Hickory Comic Con in Hickory, NC, and I ended up with a few cool finds. One of the ones I was most thrilled about was a McDonald's toy that I either paid 50 cents or $1 for (I can't remember): Cosmo from McDonald's Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 Happy Meal promotion. Besides the main Avengers films, Guardians of the Galaxy has been my favorite of the MCU series of films and I did love Volume 3, but man, what a rough film in places, right? After watching it, I was shocked there was a McDonald's promotion for the film. An F bomb, some pretty intense violence, and animal cruelty? I'm kind of remembering how people flipped out at the Batman Returns Happy Meal toys when I was a kid. I rarely collect McDonald's stuff these days but when I saw Cosmo at a table at Hickory Comic Con I knew I had to take her home with me. I like to pick up toys that look like my dogs and for about 8 months, including during when GOTG3 was released, we had a beautiful golden retriever mix with reddish fur who looked a lot like Cosmo. She was a stray who came to our house and we kept after spending the first couple months trying to find her owner, but, unfortunately, we had to rehome her after she decided our senior Jack Russel/ beagle mix was her arch enemy. She was a great dog other than that and the family that has her now adores her. She guards their kids and their chickens. I've been picking up Cosmo stuff over the past year or two as she I love the character and Cosmo reminds me of our dog who we only had for such a short time. Ready to check out this fun little McDonald's Cosmo? Then join me after the break...

The Facts:

Height: 3 1/4ths inches

Articulation: Hinged tail.

Accessories: None

Year of Release: 2023

Original Retail Price: Free with purchase of a Happy Meal

The Positives:

* The figures in this series are fairly similar in style to the Marvel Happy Meal toys we've been seeing for a few years now, though these come on a little bluish-grey platform with a view screen and dials and such that rocks back and forth. The edges look like they would lock with the rest of the series, so I assume if you put them all together and move one up and down the rest will move, too. Each one has a bobbling/ wiggling feature, though no one seems to connect them all and make them wobble in any videos I watched to see if they do that.
* In the film, Cosmo is a CGI creation based on a golden retriever/ Labrador mix. She's absolutely adorable and lovable with a Russian accent. I'm not sure who has my favorite Russian accent in the MCU: Maria Bakalova's Cosmo (Bakalova is Bulgarian) or Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova (Pugh is British). Cosmo is definitely my favorite MCU dog, I'm pretty sure of that. Sorry Dogpool and Lucky. This is a very cartoonish figure with the eyes painted on, but it is a pretty cute toy.

* Cosmo is a dog in a spacesuit, so what's not to like here, right? With a little cutout for the tail and everything! The real space dog Cosmo is based on, Laika, did not actually get a uniform, but Cosmo does and it's pretty nicely detailed for a McDonald's toy.

* These figures all have some little part that moves or wobbles when you rock the base. Cosmo wags her tail, especially fitting for those times when you give her a treat or tell her she's a good dog.

The Negatives:

* One side of Cosmo is just fantastic bit the other side has the screw holes visible. Oddly enough, it's the side that's more likely to face front and be seen. Weird decision, huh?
If you're a fan of space dogs (I am), or Cosmo (I am), or you just like figures of dogs that kind of look like your dogs (I am), then this is a fun little collectible, especially if you find it at a convention or toy show for a buck or less (like I did). Definitely a Good and a 1/2 rendition of Cosmo. I never did get the Marvel Legends figure as the prices were higher than I wanted to pay and I didn't want another set of movie figures (I think I ended up with Mantis on clearance somewhere), but I do have a couple other Cosmos sitting around with a Dug from Up! near the ID tag of our beloved Golden mix who we just couldn't keep. I miss you, Radar!

Looking for more of Cosmo? I've also reviewed the Funko POP! Cosmo #1207 and the GOTG Vol.3 Epic Heroes set of Groot/Cosmo/ Baby Rocket.

  1. So cool. Didn't even know McDonald's had GotG toys. Which reminds me, isn't it that time of year for a Shamrock Shake?

    1. It is indeed. I haven't seen anyone advertising them, but I don't pay much attention to McDonald's these days. If I want a fast food burger, Wendy's is where it's at.

And, yes, McDonald's has done a few sets of these for different MCU films in a similar style. I know my daughter has a few from The Marvels, Endgame, and Thor Ragnarok at the least.
