Today's a Thursday, so I'm back with another Creature from the Black Lagoon review and this time it's a toy that isn't from my collection. This glow-in-the-dark version of the Gill-man is from Adora's collection and was a Christmas gift from a friend a year or two ago. Adora was thrilled to let me take some pictures of him for 31 Days of Toy Terror Takes the Universe this year. While I've now reviewed the Funko ReAction Creature from the Black Lagoon, I haven't owned any of Super7's versions of the Creature personally. While this is a wildly colored version based on classic 1970s era Halloween costumes, the sculpt is much sharper and nicer than the original 2014 Funko figure. This guy has a nice healthy glow, wild colors, and a cool display box that mimics an old Halloween costume package. Ready to dive in for another Creature from the Black Lagoon review? Then join me after the break...

The Positives:
* The Gill-man really stands out being molded in a neon yellow plastic that glows-in-the-dark. The bright colors on his chest and face really add to the unique look of this guy. This link has a great image of a Creature costume from this era which seems to be the inspiration for the color scheme. The detail on the scales on this guy is really impressive and it make me want to pick up a standard version of Super7's Gill-man to go along with my Funko version.
* This guy has a very strong glow. I had a hard time capturing it on camera but he's much brighter than many other glow-in-the-dark items I've purchased in recent years. he's nice and bright!
* He's also really nicely sculpted in the back as well. Check out those purple fins! The color is bold and I love the design. Neon yellow and lavender? This guy is tripping.
* Not only are the Gill-man's claws nicely sculpted but he's also sporting some purple webbing between his fish fingers and bright red nails. Bright red nails? Yup. Bright red nails.
* How about some bright red toenails as well? Sure, why the heck not. This guy is definitely not afraid to be his best self.
* To really hammer home the theme that this version of the Creature is based on the vintage Halloween costume the figure comes in a cardboard box with a plastic window. Usually I don't give the package much credit but this package with retro inspired art definitely looks like the old vinyl smock and plastic mask costumes of years past. A little before my time, I think (when I was quite young those costumes were still sold but on clothes hangars), but still quite nostalgic. And completely collector friendly.
Looking for more of the Creature from the Black Lagoon/ Gillman or other Sea Creature inspired by him? I've reviewed plenty of other Gill-Man-like creatures including the Funko ReAction Creature from the Black Lagoon, Wavecrawler from Hasbro's Kre-O line, the Imaginext Gillman, the Creature from the Black Lagoon from Monster Force, the Gill-Man from the Big Bucket of Monsters, Leonardo as the Creature from the Black Lagoon from NECA, the Sea Creature from Mezco's Tower of Fear, and the Swamp Creature from Lego Monster Fighters.

Love everything about this...except the color :D Creach is my favorite Universal Monster and I have a hard time seeing him in anything other than B&W or green. The packaging is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThanks for being part of the Countdown this year!
I always look forward to it. By the way, have you seen the new Christmas Creature that Super7 showed off today? He's all red with a green belly. Pretty wild!
DeleteI just got the email with them in it...blech LOL
DeleteI really want the Invisible Man, at least. I do get a kick out of some of their strange colorways.
