It's another Mummy Monday as we enter the week of Halloween and today I'm checking out the Mummy from the Pop Mart blind boxed Universal Monsters Alliance line. These came out last year and feature the classic Universal Monsters (and a few less often seen friends) chilling out in movie theater styled chairs with snacks. Get it? They're watching their films! I love it. This is such a cool and cute line of little figures. There are 10 figures in the set but only 9 figures in a case as Dr. Jekyll/ Mr. Hyde is a 1/108 chase figure. My case didn't come with him and he's pretty pricy, so I don't have him. I have the rest of the crew, though, and I thought this would be another fun chance to show off Boris Karloff's Imhotep. Let's take a look at this blind-boxed classic after the break...
The Facts:
Height: 3 inches (sitting)
Articulation: None
Accessories: Chair and collectible card.
Year of Release: 2023
Original Retail Price: $16
The Positives:
* Each figure is pre-posed, sitting down in a grand, old fashioned theater style chair. They are removable from the chair but since they can't stand on their own there isn't much reason to remove them unless you're sitting them down somewhere else. I love the concept that the Universal Studios Monsters are just chilling out, watching movies together. It's quite charming!
* This is an excellent, stylized take on Boris Karloff as Imhotep. He's definitely chilling with a snack but he still looks pretty intense. The paintwork, sculpting, and design on the Universal Monsters Alliance series is all top notch. I'm really impressed. As far as I'm aware, these are the only Pop Mart collectibles I've owned.

* The portrait is great and captures the shriveled and desiccated look of Karloff as Imhotep, especially the sunken in cheeks. He's got the slicked back hair, hypnotic eyes, and a look on his face that makes him look like he's not quite amused. Maybe he's upset that Lon Chaney Jr. was kind of wasted as Kharis in the quartet of Mummy sequels.
* What's the Mummy snacking on? I think it looks like chicken nuggets (my daughter thought the box looks like a KFC bucket with the red and white stripes) but it could also be falafel. You know, I'd think Imhotep would be down for some falafel as a movie snack, right?
* This shot is just to show the quality and attention to detail that Pop Mart put into this figure. Check out the bandages all around Imhotep's body and the dark wash to make them look all aged and musty.
* The chair is a really neat piece with a red cushioned seat, wood construction, and silver paint apps for the bolts holding it together.
* The back of the chair actually has the name of the film complete with the release date (December 22nd, 1932). What a cool little extra!
* A little collectible card is included as well. Just a neat little touch, though nothing too special.
The Pop Mart Universal Monsters Alliance figures are really a near set with a unique take on the Universal Monsters crew. The Mummy is an excellent figure, whether you're displaying him on his own or putting him in a theater type display with the rest of the Universal Studios horror stars. He really looks fantastic and has some incredibly neat details. I can imagine these making a cool display near someone's home theater system. He's a Great and a 1/2 figure and a really fun take on the Mummy. I may have at least one more to check out before Halloween arrives...
If you're looking for more of the Mummy, specifically Imhotep, I've reviewed the Universal Monsters Select The Mummy, the NECA Mummy (Black & White), McFarlane Monsters Mummy Playset, the Mummy ReAction figure, the Funko POP! Bedtime Bear as the Mummy #1628, the Big Bucket of Monsters Mummy, the Mummy from Mezco's Tower of Fear, and the mummy included with the Mighty Max set "Mighty Max Conquers the Palace of Poison."
Okay, that is just like the super-cutest thing ever!
ReplyDeleteThis is a really neat set. I wasn't familiar with Pop Mart but the quality on these is excellent. The concept is just really fun, too.
