Wrapping Up 2024: The Mummy from Toony Terrors by NECA

The Toony Terrors Frankenstein and Mummy were both Christmas gifts from my parents for Christmas of 2024 which, along with the standard NECA Frankenstein and the graphic novel featuring Mary Shelly's story and Boris Karloff's likeness, led me to proclaim it as "A Very Karloff Christmas." That sounds like an old 60s novelty song, doesn't it? Today I'm checking out the Toony Terrors Mummy, leaving us now 3/4th of the way through the set. Out of the classic Universal main crew, I do think the Mummy is my least favorite of the films. It's good, don't get me wrong, but it's not as good as Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man, or The Wolf Man. Now, when it comes to post 1960 Universal Monsters films? 1999's The Mummy sits at the top and reigns supreme. I really hope we see a resurgence of merchandise for that film someday. It's tough to beat the iconic look of Karloff, though, and that's what we get here. Just more animated. ready to unwrap this Mummy? Then join me after the break...

The Facts:

Height: 5 5/8ths inches

Articulation: Balljointed neck.

Accessories: None

Non-Scalper Price: $15- $17 dollars

The Positives:

* Imotep doesn't spend much time in The Mummy in this look, even though it's the most iconic. The majority of the time he's in his Ardath Bey disguise. Ardath Bey has received a bit of attention from toy companies (NECA has a 7-inch scale Ardath Bey coming out this year) but Imhotep's mummified appearance is definitely the main look. This figure is very statuesque with little articulation. That being said, the looks pretty impressive with his ancient bandages just starting to come unraveled and his arms crossed over his chest. The bandages have multiple colors woven in, so it keeps the figure from looking stale.

* The portrait is excellent. NECA is usually pretty spot on with likenesses, even in this toonified line, and this is no doubt Boris Karloff as Imhotep. The colors are excellent and really complement the mummified appearance. The mouth is really good too. It's impressive work on such a stylized figure.

* Here's a look at the back of the figure so you can really appreciate the impressive work on the bandages. Making them different shades really was a smart idea, as it gives a very neutrally colored toy some welcome contrast, better showing off the individual wrappings.

* Giving the Mummy a little bit of wrapping hanging off of his left foot is a neat visual and definitely seems like a small detail you'd see in a cartoon version of the character.

The Negatives:

* I've already mentioned that Imhotep doesn't have any articulation other than a balljointed neck, but I'm kind of neutral on that since most Toony Terrors are rather pre-posed. What does bug me is that the Mummy doesn't have a stand. He can stand on his own, yes, but the slightest jarring of a shelf will cause him to tumble. With a narrow footprint like this, why not give us a stand? Dracula comes with one already and I really think the other Universal Monsters should have come with one, too.

I love the look and sculpt of the Mummy but I really wish NECA had included a stand with him. I have plenty, but still; this guy really could use one. Also, an accessory would have been nice. A cartoonish Scroll of Thoth or an asp or something would have really made for a more fun figure. These guys look good as a group, no doubt, but they feel like they could use a little extra something. The Mummy is a Good figure and fans of the character, Boris Karloff, or the Universal Monsters overall should like it, but it's rather a barebones release.

If you're looking for more of the Mummy, specifically Imhotep, I've reviewed the Universal Monsters Select The Mummy, the NECA Mummy (Black & White), the Mummy from Pop Mart's Universal Monsters Alliance, the McFarlane Monsters Mummy Playsetthe Mummy ReAction figure, the Funko POP! Bedtime Bear as the Mummy #1628, the Big Bucket of Monsters Mummy, the Mummy from Mezco's Tower of Fear, and the mummy included with the Mighty Max set "Mighty Max Conquers the Palace of Poison."
