Figure Review: Brogy from One Piece Senzozekkei by Bandai Namco/ Banpresto

Are you ready for another tale of RossCon goodness, toy fans and collectors? Just a weekend or two ago I was at a Ross and found a few new One Piece figures. Not action figures, but collectible figures that are more like miniature statues (or stactions!) which you quickly assemble and put on your shelf. Bandai Namco/ Banpresto has multiple product ranges for this type of figure and today I'm checking out Brogy from the One Piece Senkozekkei line. What does Senzozekkei mean? It apparently means "flashy, spectacular scene" and features characters in much more animated and action-packed poses than the usual figures. They also are usually able to pair with another figure in the line, allowing you to create a battle scene or a diorama. Brogy, one of the Giant Warrior Pirates residing on Little Garden, can pair with his best friend and rival Dorry. Guess what? A couple days after finding Brogy I found Dorry, too. These are really new figures that a lot of stores haven't even received in stock and Ross has them. Crazy! Brogy and Dorry first appear in season 2 of the anime and it looks like they'll appear in season 2 of the live action show as well. Ready to check out this small-scale version of the almost 70 foot tall giant? Then laugh along with me ("gababababa gababababa") and join me after the break...

The Facts:

Height: 4 1/2 inches to the top of his head, 7 1/2 to the top of his ax.

Articulation: None

Accessories: Removable ax.

Non-Scalper Price: $30 dollars

Comparison:

* Just in case you're curious, here's a look at Brogy (left) next to the Banpresto Nami (Egghead) from the One Piece Shukko line (center) and the Monkey D. Luffy (Future Island Egghead) from S.H. Figuarts. As you can see, Brogy is absolutely not in scale with anything else you're likely to find from One Piece. You'd need Micro Machines versions of the Straw Hats to blend in with him, which would actually be really cool.

The Positives:

* Here's Brogy! If you get a kick out of the character or if you just like Viking-like warriors with massive axes, this statue is for you! It's incredibly durable and made from plastic, so breakage isn't much of a worry. Assembly is easy as all you'll need to do is plug Brogy into the base and put the axe in his hand. It's pretty easy. Brogy looks like he's just swung his ax back to prepare for a blow and the force is so strong it's causing the nearby water to blow back as well.

* The sculpt on Brogy is really nice and Banprsto really did do a great job on making him look like he's been captured right in the middle of action. There's a nice sense of flow to the sculpt; it feels like all of the energy is moving backwards towards Brogy's ax in anticipation of him letting it swing forward for a powerful attack. The paint detail is impressive and everything looks really crisp.

* Brogy's portrait might be small but it really conveys his character well. I love that huge grin and the crazy facial hair. His little, beady eyes are just peeking out from underneath that two horned helmet, making him look rather focused. He's just a fun character design. "Gababababa!"

* Brogy's outfit is really nicely sculpted and painted. While his left half is mostly hidden under his long cape, the right side shows off plenty of dinged leather, shaggy fur lining, and brown leather straps with gold buckles and fasteners. Oh, and those brilliant orange and black striped pants. Maybe Brogy wants to join Tiger Force

* Brogy's cape is pretty dynamic, flowing with his body as he swings his ax back in preparation for a massive strike. It looks good, even though you're not likely to display the figure facing in this direction.

* The base is quite nice and definitely more exciting than just a flat, black disc stand. There's a nice rocky texture and the water effect created by the backswing of Brogy's axe. It also keeps him standing upright pretty securely, so you shouldn't have any issue of this guy tumbling over.

* Brogy's ax is a separate piece that fits in his hand. It says in place securely, so no worries about it falling out while he's on display, and has a pretty nice paintjob to show that the blade is a made of rough metal and is seriously heavy.

Let's Bring 'Em Together:

* Here's a look at Brogy and Dorry together. They do not physically connect or anything but their bases are designed to sit right next to each other with rocky outcroppings that fit together. Why would you want one without the other?

How's Brogy? He's quite neat, especially when you pair him up with Dorry (who I'll be reviewing soon, don't worry!). He's a fun character and this is a neat statue of him. Considering he's supposed to be almost 70 feet tall, there's really not any "in-scale" way to display him with other One Piece figures, though thankfully he and Dorry make a nice display on their own. Get a tiny version of the Going Merry and put it near them or use them as bookends of a sort for some One Piece manga. He's a Great collectible figure/ statue and I'm quite thrilled with him, especially at the price point I found him at.

This is the first figure of Brogy the Red Ogre I've reviewed on the site.

    1. These are really strong figures with a nice aesthetic. I've only watched the first two episodes of Season 2 so far but we'll get there soon. We're savoring it! (My wife is a binge watcher and I am not. I'm holding her back, I know it.)
